It's Too Hard to Manage Music Now: Why It's Okay to Miss the Old iPod
The Atlantic ^ | December 11, 2014 | David Sims

Recently I had a fairly pedestrian thought, a thought I've been having on and off for 10 years: "I want to put some music onto my portable music listening device." This used to be a relative cinch: I'd put the music on iTunes, plug in my iPod, and drag the songs over. Now, anytime I dare hook my iPhone up to a computer, there's software that needs updating, apps and photos I need to clear away for extra room, and esoteric rules regarding what is allowed to "sync." After finally getting an album onto my phone, another software update a week later reverted my music library to its previous state, putting me back at square one and making me long for my iPod, the last device I owned that was just for music.

Apple discontinued the "iPod Classic" (the click-wheeled hard drive that changed the way much of the world listened to music) two months ago. Last weekend, The Guardian found absence was making hearts grow fonder. "With a storage capacity double the size of any current iPods still being made, versions of the 160GB Classic—which can hold around 40,000 songs—are being sold as new via Amazon for up to £670," or more than $1,000, Paul Gallagher wrote.

I took one of my kids iPod Nano and had to do some research online on how to use the device the way I wanted. I just wanted to cut and paste the files onto and off the iPod. I still have no clue how to use the supposedly default folders and snyc function. I do not understand why Apple makes what should be a simple process so convulted.

Apple still hasn’t come up with an elegant way to manage multiple devices (iPhone, iPod, Wife’s iPhone, kids iPod, the old iPod in the drawer...) with a single iTunes login.

iTunes still wants to manage one device with one login. Their best suggestion for multiple devices is to have multiple logins on your computer. A non-starter when I want some music on my iPhone, and a shorter subset of music on my smaller memory iPod Touch.

Must be their way to ensure you must buy the latest and greatest device.

I don’t have an ipod but have had an iphone and ipad since inception. I use Pandora on both with Bluetooth speakers on our boat, in our home, and in our cars. I have never paid one dime to iTunes or anywhere else for music or games.
And I love the new icloud backups cause I never have to plug in to iTunes ever again. I too hated it.

Try downloading from iTunes onto a Microsoft pc then transferring via MS mediaplayer to a Sansa player with that only reads MP3s or WMA. That’s what I’m having to do...mostly because I’m too cheap to buy apple. And yeah iTunes doesn’t seem (to me anyway) to be as user friendly as it could be.

For listening to music I like my iPod classic a lot better. The battery lasts far longer and I don't really care about all of the pictures.

We seldom use iTunes. We love spotty and Pandora. My husband still has his original iPod, also.

Apple has been doing its utmost to “Microsoft” iTunes.

By this, I mean that each iteration makes me less and less inclined to use it.

Awful icons, redesigned layouts, pressure to use the cloud (which I NEVER will use), etc.

Steve Jobs, we miss you.

While I am not a lawyer, does the acronym RIAA mean anything to you? From their web site, this is their self-description of their purpose;

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) is the trade organization that supports and promotes the creative and financial vitality of the major music companies.
Note the emphasis on MUSIC COMPANIES, not artists!

Lots of the difficulty in using iTunes and the play-back devices derives from the fungibility of digital music, use (or non-use) of DMA for restrictions and only finally does ease-of-use come into play. Things were so much easier in the days of LPs and even analog tape, but now with digital, it is a dance of legalities in a minefield.

Personally, I am surprised we have it as good as we do. I think Steve Jobs caught them by surprise and got enough momentum going that the RIAA could not shut Apple & iTunes down.

Neil Young says the audio quality is abysmal. Is that true? I don’t use any of these devices.

When you have a large digital music collection, there are programs out there that are MUCH better than iAnything to catalog them.

I myself prefer MediaMonkey. I’ve been using it for most of a decade.

I prefer vinyl but a record player is a little too bulky to carry around. But I have vinyl at home!

Me too. I use Google Drive on my PC to store music in the cloud. Then download to Goodreader on my iPad or iPhone. On Goodreader you can easily organize your music or documents into folders and sub folders.

No more iTunes for me.
