Could the US even launch a nuclear missile if it wanted to? Critics point to growing alarm
UK daily mail ^ | 20 December 2014

Faced with one of its biggest challenges in years - repairing a troubled nuclear missile corps - the Air Force has taken an important first step by admitting, after years of denial, that its problems run deep and wide. Less certain is whether it will find all the right fixes, apply them fully and convince a doubting force of launch officers, security guards and other nuclear workers that their small and narrow career field is not a dead end. The stakes are huge. The nation's strategy for deterring nuclear war rests in part on the 450 Minuteman 3 missiles that stand ready, 24/7, to launch at a moment's notice from underground silos in five states. Some question the wisdom of that strategy in an era of security threats dominated by terrorism and cyberattacks. But whatever their role, those intercontinental ballistic missiles, or ICBMs, will have to be safeguarded for years to come.

The answer is yes. The article makes valid points about morale. But the technical aspects of the matter are not affected by morale.

There may be some issues, but I have no doubt whatsoever the nuclear force can execute its mission if so commanded.

I can’t imagine Obama ever launching a nuclear strike even if half the country were devastated in a nuclear attack.

Our subs can also launch nukes and then there’s the air force. Or did that get hope and changed too?

Is Obama setting us up for a takeover by China?

You can be confident that the subs have plenty of operational nuke weapons. I'm less sure about the Minuteman missiles.

BUT, it is a frightening thought that Obozo has control of the production and maintenance of existing weapons.

if this absolute failure of an administration did try to launch a missile, it would nuke itself.

Obama is more likely to order a nuclear strike on the USA itself!

I can’t imagine Obama ever launching a nuclear strike.

Well, I can imagine it pretty easily.

1 MT map? Remember, it has to be a surface burst or the Kaaba will still survive.

What the article talks around is, nothing lasts forever...and the guys who designed these beasts, know fundamentally how they work, are mostly all retired or dead. Loss of institutional memory is a potentially crippling side effect of the draw down on national defense.

This is such BS. The USAF will say or do anything to bring in the dollars when things are tight.

When the Grand High Mucky Mucks are paraded through an army base, the post commander shows them the best that they have and the GHMM’s say, “Oh! Well, then you’re doing fine.”

The USAF walks the GHMMs through the dregs. It’s horrifying. And the GHMMs recoil and dump the funds into their housing.

Two years later and the USAFs wives are walking through subsidized shopping malls that would put Beverly Hills to shame and army wives are scraping mold off their walls and begging housing to stop the roof from dripping into their infant’s crib.

The USAF has this down to an art. And yes. They’ll even torture the troops to get the right answers for the GHMMs.

I can’t say that they’re not smart. Shameless, but not dumb. They know how to keep the funds flowing when things are tight.

After 25 years, I’m just shocked that the GHMMs, congress, and the American people still keep falling for their schtick.
