I have a standard retort I use every time someone approaches me in a parking lot or, like in this incident, in front of a store. It's simple and effective in keeping the unwanted person from bothering me further.

I just say in a very loud, emphatic voice, "Do I know you?" When they say no, I finish with another emphatic, "I didn't think so!" and continue walking away. It conveys the message dramatically that I'm not interested in engaging them in whatever they are up to. It works for beggars, panhandlers, petition signature collectors and various other riffraff accosting you in public. It has never failed me. Shuts them down every single time.

I have a story sorta like that. On the last election day, I went to my precinct and quick as I started walking across the parking lot, a woman comes flying over to greet me. She wants to give me a paper indicating who the dim-0 is in every race, so I can vote for them. I say, so this tells me every dim-0? YES, she says, excitedly! I say thank you, I’m gonna vote against every one of them.
