When I see someone I think is going to come up to me, I simple pretend to be having an animated cell phone conversation.

To each his own.

I don't want to appear to be distracted by talking on the phone. To me, it makes you look more vulnerable. I prefer going directly at them so I am in charge of the situation and not them. They always buckle and turn tail when you are the one who is decisive and in command.
