We're back, and are kicking off the 2015 season with a fine film from Australia.
Patrick Foley (William Holden) is a sick old man, wanting only to return to his childhood home in the Outback before he dies. His plans become complicated, however, when he discovers Shawn Daley (Ricky Schroeder), a sheltered 10-year old boy from Los Angeles who has suddenly found himself orphaned and alone in the Australian wilderness.

I also think most FReepers will enjoy this one. It's got a little something for everyone. A warm and poignant story of friendship and bonding, a lesson on the importance of survival skills, and just some gorgeous scenery (the film was shot on location in the Blue Mountains and Barrington Forrest). 7.25/10
First movie ping of 2015 ping!
Anyone remember a film like that?
Saving my TV time for tomorrow night’s TCM “Essentials” presentation of Fritz Lang’s groundbreaking “Metropolis” - early science fiction and special effects and a great theatrical score - even though the entire movie is silent - good viewing....
I didn’t know that William Holden was still alive in 1980, let alone still making movies.
It was Holden’s second to last movie (right before SOB). He died a year later.
later
He was not that old and didn't die of natural causes. As I recall (without researching it) he got drunk, passed out, fell and cut himself badly, and bled to death.
Yup. Holden had a lifelong battle with alcoholism, and that was probably the main contributing factor both to his accident, and said accident being fatal. Holden tripped on a rug, bashing his head against a nightstand or end table. He opened a bad gash on his head, but apparently didn’t realize how bad it was. The investigation and autopsy showed his BAC was .22 and that he probably was conscious for up to a half-hour before blood loss overcame him. He was probably just too drunk to realize how serious his situation was.
Sad end to a great career. Especially when one considers his drinking had already caused tragedy once before (Holden killed someone in a drunk driving accident in Italy in the 1960s)
Another great pick. One of my favorites. Always makes me think of my Dad and, of course, Bill Holden. Not to mention God’s own sense of humor.
Thank you for the kind words!
Thank you!
Well, there was “A Boy and his Dog” but it was a horrible movie that will make you want to cut your eyeballs out
did you ever see the Japanese animated film “Metropolis”?
Never saw it - recommended?.....
