Among Rose Wilder Lane's works of fiction was Let the Hurricane Roar (New York: Longmans, 1932), the story of a young couple who homestead on the Great Plains in the 1870's and which is partly autobiographical. It was later re-issued under the title Young Pioneers and made into a TV series in the 1970's.

One thing ruined the TV show for me, and that was Pa’s crying. Almost every episode, he was bawling about something.

A bit south of there at Forrest City. It was a thriving metropolis of about fifty people at the time. I think it’s a little smaller, now.

According to the Indian that warned them, it was cyclic - every 17 years or something like that.

Another author who was somewhat like her and had similar views against socialism/communism, was the man who wrote “The Devil and Daniel Webster”. I can’t figure out why they didn’t mention him in this article! I know this article was written about Lane and her contemporaries, and he could’ve done his works earlier in the century. I think his name was Stephen St. Vincent-Benet?

He was very worried about communism getting into the country, and was very much against it. Much of his work illustrated his concern, and warned against it. However, I don’t know what his political leanings were.

I have always hated Sesame Street ever since I can remember. As a kid, I preferred Perry Mason reruns and still do.

Thanks for posting this and the wander down memory lane.
Loved the books growing up but always had a problem with her courting a guy with the name Almanzo...

On the WKRP episode “Real Families”, Herb’s wife said it was her favorite show since people were always getting incurable diseases, going blind and such.

Never cared for little house or father Murphy.

Glad I’m not the only one who thought that way. I will have to give them Special Letters Unit.

I thought that the current consensus was that Rose wrote the Little House books, based on stories provided by Laura. But authorship credit was given to Laura with Rose being identified as editor.

Cath, never watched the show just because of that and the overall messing with one of my favorite series growing up...
I feel that way today about the Starz series “Outlander” which I have thoroughly enjoyed (the first four volumes). Can’t stand what they have done in the series so won’t watch anymore.
Another great series for girls/women that they did well in the movies (first two movies) is the “Anne of Green Gables” series by Lucy Maud Montgomery...great insight into Canadian history and while starting as a book for girls, evolves into books for women. The last one is a real tear jerker! Loved it.
Cheers!

I missed Anne of Green Gables, though I’ve heard very good things about it.
