Im not sure everyone here would sing his praises off the court.
Politicians, journalists, lobbyists and financiers whose only accomplishment in life is their espousal and enabling of liberalism - my opinion of them is mostly formed by their politics.
Musicians, athletes, doctors, lawyers, engineers who happen to be liberal - my opinion of them is mostly formed by how much good they do in their chosen field - and Dean Smith was a towering figure in the world of NCAA men's basketball.
Outside of politics, I'll leave the ideological purity tests to Stalin, Mao, and American liberals who wouldn't dream of dating anyone who does not agree with them on a long laundry list of political and social issues.

I agree with your sentiments. I had no idea what Dean Smith’s political views were before he died. I do note that many sports commentators are praising him now more for those views than his achevements in sports. While you and, believe it or not, I can separate the two, lefties view everything in terms of leftist politics.
