'The captain of the Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia has been found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to 16 years in prison.

Captain Francesco Schettino was at the helm when the ship hit rocks and sank in 2012, killing 32 people.

He was accused of taking the liner too close to the shore and then abandoning ship with passengers and crew still on board.

Schettino denied the charges and said he was being made a scapegoat.'

“Seems a pretty harsh to me.”

Seriously? 32 people lost their lives. He was the captain, his responsibility. I thought he got off kinda light.

Seems a pretty harsh to me.

He ran his ship onto the rocks and then made sure he was in one of the first boats heading for shore, leaving his passengers behind. What do you think he should have gotten?

I just watched the NOVA episode about the raising and salvage of the ship - tremendous amount of time and money. One diver died during the operation and the producers of the documentary mentioned the endangered mussels and delicate seabed more than the loss of human life.
As for the skipper, 16 years is a light sentence IMHO.

I would think the cruise line and insurance company would see to it he never sees the light of day again. He cost them billions.

(And relatives of the deceased have their own take on this hot-dogger also.)

Just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale,
A tale of a fateful trip
That started from this tropic port
Aboard this tiny ship.

The mate was a mighty sailing man,
The skipper brave and sure.
Five passengers set sail that day
For a three hour tour, a three hour tour.

The weather started getting rough,
The tiny ship was tossed,
If not for the courage of the fearless crew
The minnow would be lost, the minnow would be lost.

The ship set ground on the shore of this uncharted desert isle
With Gilligan
The Skipper too,
The millionaire and his wife,
The movie star
The professor and Mary Ann,
Here on Gilligans Isle.

So this is the tale of the castaways,
They’re here for a long, long time,
They’ll have to make the best of things,
It’s an uphill climb.

The first mate and the Skipper too,
Will do their very best,
To make the others comfortable,
In the tropic island nest.

No phone, no lights no motor cars,
Not a single luxury,
Like Robinson Crusoe,
As primative as can be.

So join us here each week my friends,
You’re sure to get a smile,
From seven stranded castaways,
Here on “Gilligan’s Isle.”

Wasn’t he the guy who ran away as soon as the trouble started, whined and complained when the local shore commander tried to order him to get his sorry butt back to the ship, and cooked up a story about accidentally falling into a lifeboat?
