April kicks off with a day for fools, but spends the rest of its weeks celebrating meters, diction and iambic pentameters. Yes, it’s National Poetry Month. And as part of a celebration of the written word, Garrison Keillor is once again using his Common Good Books in St. Paul for a poetry contest. It’s the third straight year, and Keillor himself is offering $5,000 in prizes – three winners will get a grand apiece, and four runners-up will each get $500. The theme this year? “Dear you.” So the work must be a letter to a “specific, living person,” the rules state.

A poem for Garrison.

Ou Sont Les Toilettes?

I saw the deer.
The deer saw me.
I took a crap.
The deer took a pee.

That's hilarious. The Writer's Almanac is a daily feature on PBS, which I catch every now and then quite by accident.

Every single poem he reads for the day is of a type.

Let me spontaneously write one of these types right at this moment:

The park bench where the young lovers sat
was strewn with newspapers
Left by the forlorn gentleman now walking
Along the pathway toward the museum under a grey sky,
And she turned to him and said:
I wonder if he was able to read the events of the day?"
And he replied:
"Sadness and regret make one literate in matters of the heart."
And then they in unison took long, slow drags from the muse within their cigarettes.

I taught high school English for 20 years, and I write poetry myself, so I have a particular interest in Keillor and what he presents to the public as worthy.

His ability to discern poetry of merit parallels his ability to analyze the passing political scene: utter failure.

DRAT! I drew "Mr. Orange" in this poetry contest.

Once there is a man from Lake Wobegon
Who was on the radio and made me yawn
He was incredibly boring
That’s why I was snoring
He makes me puke on me lawn

From Lake Wobegon there was a Pinko...
Who’s radio comedy was stinko.
He offered a writing competition...
with rotten entries we will not mention,
I’m much rather be playing pachinko!
