Russians use both "fatherland" and "motherland." Otyechestvo, from otyets (father) means fatherland. Rodina, which is also widely used, comes from rod (race) and can be translated as motherland, homeland, native land or land of one's birth. It is also the name of a right-wing political party in Russia.
