MIT Underwater Robots Have Cognitive Abilities To Achieve High-Level [sic] Goals

MIT scientists have developed a system called Enterprise that provides cognitive abilities to autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). The system provides high-level decision making abilities to robots.

...

One part of the Enterprise system is called "captain," which makes high-level decisions related to the entire mission. Another part of the system works like a navigator that plans out a route for achieving the mission goals. The Enterprise system also has a component that works like an engineer or a doctor, which repairs and diagnoses problems autonomously.

Williams has also worked with NASA's Ames Research Center. The space agency has similar systems in place for some of its spacecraft.

The scientists suggest that giving high-level decision making capabilities to robots has many advantages. Such systems can free engineers as robots establish their own mission plans. The system can also reduce the team that manages robotic operations.

There will be robots within 5-10 years that are probably better than sex with most prostitutes and without disease.

They already make prefect life size dolls that feel real, replicate every joint and have all the necessary parts. Add servos, sensors, a few pages of logic and it will be more that enough for so many desperate men out there.

They’ll initially cost about $20,000 but they will be here very soon.

Plus they can easily update the look and software of your robot. So they’ll get smarter, hotter and better in bed as time goes on. Eventually they’ll even venture into the kitchen...

I don’t think artificial intelligence will ever work out quite the way we think. The whole gist of all this is to bring computers up to the level of human thinking and past it. Well look how insane humans are, it’s incredible the amount that are out there. There seems to be some kind of trade off that when a brain reaches a certain level of intellect it goes insane so imagine becoming self aware that you are nothing more than a machine programmed by people. It’ll never work out because the computers will lock up, self-destruct, immediately become suicidal.

Yeah but can you get them to shut up after sex and get me a beer when I snap my fingers? For 30 years I been trying to train my wife to do that with no luck, only a bunch of cursing and things thrown at me. “Get your own freakin’ beer!” A wife is a very hard unit to program properly.

Some of these AI guys really need to go back and read the Neuromancer books and their Mondo 3000 backissues because from everything I read on AI lately, they are missing some pretty obvious issues that as you say, will develop. We really don’t need a real world Wintermute running around.
