Why? Hooked on phonics always impressed me as a scam. What worked for me and the kids was regular parent reading to kids time mixed with answering "what's that word" with "sound it out" for the longer words and straight recognition for common short words like the, and, run, etc.
Without PHONICS, you cannot even try to “sound out” a word. That’s what phonics are all about. Hence the name...
