How Eisenhower solved illegal border crossings from Mexico
Christian Science Monitor ^ | July 6, 2006 | John Dillin

Fifty-three years ago, when newly elected Dwight Eisenhower moved into the White House, America's southern frontier was as porous as a spaghetti sieve. As many as 3 million illegal migrants had walked and waded northward over a period of several years for jobs in California, Arizona, Texas, and points beyond.

President Eisenhower cut off this illegal traffic. He did it quickly and decisively with only 1,075 United States Border Patrol agents – less than one-tenth of today's force.

Years later, the late Herbert Brownell Jr., Eisenhower's first attorney general, said in an interview with this writer that the president had a sense of urgency about illegal immigration when he took office.

America "was faced with a breakdown in law enforcement on a very large scale," Mr. Brownell said. "When I say large scale, I mean hundreds of thousands were coming in from Mexico [every year] without restraint."

In 1954, Ike appointed retired Gen. Joseph "Jumpin' Joe" Swing, a former West Point classmate and veteran of the 101st Airborne, as the new INS commissioner.

General Swing's fast-moving campaign soon secured America's borders – an accomplishment no other president has since equaled. Illegal migration had dropped 95 percent by the late 1950s.

Unlike today, Mexicans caught in the roundup were not simply released at the border, where they could easily reenter the US. To discourage their return, Swing arranged for buses and trains to take many aliens deep within Mexico before being set free.

Several retired Border Patrol agents who took part in the 1950s effort, including Mr. Edwards, say much of what Swing did could be repeated today.

"Some say we cannot send 12 million illegals now in the United States back where they came from. Of course we can!" Edwards says.

Geez, with all the suckiness that this country exhibits(according to the libs) it’s strange that anybody would want to come here. I mean it’s open season on trespassers and urban amish 24/7. Why the influx? /s

I like that approach but how effective would that be today? Also, how deep into Mexico should we have them taken?

In return, we can offer Mexico that any U.S. citizen illegally crossing the border in their country will be taken to Alaska.

Instead of funding NSA to “protect” us, we should spend the dough to enforce the border.

They can be disembarked from a ship at the Port of Veracruz.

Plenty far South.

But no matter what we do, the Mexican "government" will immediately move them back to the border and push them to cross while agitating in the United States to keep them here.

And Invasion without an Invading force is not much good.

Ike handled the matter correctly and appropriately.

Wish he would have had the same strength and resolve in dealing with the Soviets in the closing days of WWII.

We see that with so much government today, 10 people to get results that are far under, what one person used to get.

The problem isn’t a lack of knowledge. The problem is politicians and businesses who love illegal aliens.

Ike was not a power-mad leftist who hated America and wanted to rule over its ashes. He did not need illegal votes for a power agenda. He cared about America and its laws, security and freedoms. He ran D-Day and fought tyranny.

Whatever happened??? (/s)

Whether it’s winning a war or securing a border, in order to make it happen Ike showed you have to want it to happen.

Odd that we’re losing hundreds of military vehicles, weapons and munitions in Iraq, while our border remains as easy to cross as the street in front of your home.

Only a Democrat like Obama could turn victories at home and abroad into routs and debacles.

Ike didn’t have to deal with MSNBC and La Raza screaming bloody murder all over TV night and day. PC is what is keeping us from securing the border and getting rid of 11 million undesireables.

Common sense is one more radical behavior under Marxist rule.

The Obama hatred for the Anglo and the America they founded is behind the intention to breed us out of democracy and capitalism, obviously.

Birth control was our undoing. We are reaping the consequences.

After taking Europe with the allies, the US/Mexico border must have looked like a cake walk.

No real Ikes or Pattons, or DeGaulles even in office today either.

“Strange” .. it’s not strange to me.

Too many governments have been standing at the border with their hands out - ready to give the immigrant anything they need and some of what they want.

However, I have a slightly different take on the immigration issue. People need to wind back the clock and take a look at the election of 2004. What happened ..?? Bush got re-elected with FOUR MILLION more votes than what he had in 2000. It’s my contention that when the DemocRATS saw the voting records and realized the Repubs. had 4 million voters who didn’t show up in 2000 - which was why they were able to make such an effort to steal the 2000 election - the race was on to get more voters for Dems.

Therefore, seeing that the Repubs. can muster 4 million more voters for every election - the DemocRATS MUST HAVE AT LEAST FIVE (5) MILLION MORE IN ORDER TO BEAT THE REPUBS.

Immediately, the number of illegals needed was 5 million.

If there’s no challenge to Obama making 5 million illegals citizens - eligible to vote - AMERICA IS TOAST.
