More than 53.7 million Turkish voters head to the polls on June 7 for a crucial parliamentary election.

The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has framed the June 7 election in Turkey as a key hurdle on the path to the powerful presidential system that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan wants to introduce.

With about 99 percent of the vote counted and despite being well ahead of other parties with the support of around 42 percent of the populace, the AKP seemed set to received fewer than 276 seats – the bare minimum to keep its parliamentary majority.

The Kurdish problem-focused Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), on the other hand, has crossed the 10 percent election threshold and decreased the number of AKP lawmakers considerably.

Turkey is two countries within a common border. I was stationed there in the late 80’s. Western Turkey was beautiful, very similar to Southern Italy and the Turks there were well educated, and mostly indistinguishable from other Mediterranean groups of people. You could compare them to the highly secular Yugoslavians that happened to be allegedly Muslim. (Blue eyed Ataturk IIRC grew up in what became Yugoslavia)

Eastern Turks...not so much. There has been huge amounts of immigration from backwards muslim countries into Turkey since I was there. Nowadays, even though I have some potential contacts in Turkey, I wouldn’t step foot there. There’s too much of a chance of ending up on Youtube getting your head chopped off.

Yes. They respect elections. This election definitely moves Turkey closer to the West.

The Turks are not bad people. It was surprising they elected this terrorist-loving nimrod in the first place. Glad, now, to see them wanting to walk it back.

The only “blow” I’ll be satisfied with for the tyrant Ergodan is when the Turks do a Mussolini on his Nazi ass.

....on his Muslim derriere.....
Ataturk freed the people of Muslim (Sharia) law and crceated Turkey as a secular nation. A good Education was important for females as well as males. Women did not cover their faces under Ataturk’s rule. Erdogan has incessantly tried to return Turkey to the Muslim “coven.”

If Erdoğan retains power, but barely wins the election, he may decide to ensure there will not be any more elections.

Will would-be Caliph Erdogan command that Hagia Sophia once again become a mosque?

It’s the acid test of his power, bottom line.

The Turks aren’t bad people except when they are massacring Christians. Something about crucifying teenage girls leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Fair point...I was more comparing them with their Muslim compatriots in other countries in the neighborhood. I hear in Turkey, even women are (or at least were) allowed to drive cars and walk around without spacesuits on.

Yes, it’s been a couple generations but they are still unwilling to admit what was done and so are likely to repeat it.

Concur, that is a problem - just as the Japanese still can’t own up to their past, even as the Germans did.
