When I see PETA in the website name I have think Hmmm, is PETA involved? Are they trying to get us to help build them a map of all the bird places they’d want to protect? More private property restrictions on the way? It’s just the cynic in me, I guess.

“PETA” in this case, is short for “Petabyte” which is a unit prefix in the metric system.

A pixel is something you’re free to google on your own if you need an explanation.

Put ‘em all together and you get: Petapixel.com, which is a (terrific) photography website.

Thank you. I found my bird there. He’s a Chuck Will’s Widow.

Thanks to everyone for the help. I found my bird. It’s called Chuck Will’s Widow. You can hear him here - http://sirismm.si.edu/testperl/nasongkey.pl?bird=Chuck-will%27s-widow .

I’ve never seen or heard this bird before. Or since, for that matter. I’ll remember him though. He was a treat to listen to.

I can buy that. I’m familiar with pixels, of course, and their occasional use as shorthand for digital pictures,so along with birds, I leaped to the conclusion “Pictures for Peta”, knowing what a devious group they are. Thanks for clearing that up!

PETA, the group, is the absolute worst. I generally get suspicious of anything with their name in it, too. But I’m a regular visitor to petapixel and I know Swampsniper, FR’s resident photographer of all things in nature, refers to them often.

FWIW the website also came up with American Robin. With the wings and being young I wasn't sure.

In any case here is a pic.
