Wrestling legend Dusty Rhodes died Thursday morning, the WWE confirmed on Twitter. He was 69.
The pro wrestler, whose real name was Virgil Runnels was famously known as "The American Dream." The cause of death is unknown.

I’m hearing there may be extenuating circumstances, possible kidney failure. Suffered a fall? None of this is confirmed from what I’m reading though.
I’d say Bruno Samartino is probably an example of a wrestler who was in addition, a great athlete, I’m sure that pertains to a number besides there being a number of juicers.
I don’t generally think of Dusty not doing anything in excess except maybe sitting at the dinner table. He did have heft and I’m not saying that in a critical way.
He was always the good guy when I saw him though they do change things up in the sport.

Ron Wright {Boot} from the 1960’s & 70’s passed away a couple months ago also. He & brother Don were well known in southeastern wrestling.

We had a small drive-in burger joint in the 70’s and had their cardboard posters up all the time.

I first became aware of Dusty Rhodes in the early 1970s when one of the local stations in Philadelphia began broadcasting “Championship Wrestling From Florida”, with Gordon Solie handling the commentary. Rhodes was a “Heel” back then. He always did a great interview, and always gave the fans their money’s worth. R.I.P. Dusty Rhodes, “The American Dream.”
Yeah unless it was Knoxville then it was at Chilhowee Park at the Jacobs building. I spent many an evening there in the mid 1970's LOL. True story as far as I know one night a fan took things too serious it seemed and stabbed Whitey Caldwell outside the building. Ron rushed him to the hospital. All of them were great athletes and entertainers. After their match they'd be out of their trunks back in their clothes and shooting the breeze in a corner somewhere. I saw that alot. The real fights were up in the stands LOL.
I seem to recall there being one “Killer Kowalski” back in Haystacks time.
Magnum TA and Jerry Lawler. I remember discovering WWW/NWA, and all that blood late at night. Not to mention all the southern accents. Like a slice of America I didn’t know existed. Quite a difference from WWF’s Yankee WASPY product.

Oh how I remember (dating myself here) the ol Indian dance leading to the head chop. I loved it.
Jay Strongbow uses that more than Wahoo I think. Strongbow was actually Italian, leading George The Animal Steele to quip that Jay was a member of the A-WOP-aho tribe.
Ric is a Republican. Some friends of mine bought one of his houses off of Monroe Rd.
I used to talk to him some when I tended bar.
He’s still around Charlotte. The accident almost killed him but he gets around ok now. Saw him back in 2006 in a Monster Truck. He brought it to the car dealership I worked at to have work done.
