VALDEZ, Alaska, - A photo shared by the U.S. Department of Interior shows a brave sea gull attempting to take on a bald eagle that had another sea gull trapped in its talons.

The Department of Interior, which shared the photo on Facebook, said photographer David Canales witnessed the struggle while kayaking on Prince William Sound in Alaska.

The department said the "epic aerial battle" came to an end when the sea gull gave up on trying to save its friend and the eagle flew off with its prey.

Canales posted a second photo on his Facebook account that appears to show the eagle escaping with the trapped gull while two other sea gulls give chase.

Superstition is that seagulls have the souls of the dammed ... never kill one.

I hate sea gulls. I guess the hatered might be misplaced, after all they are only so annoying because idiots feed them on beaches.

Franklin wanted a turkey for the national symbol rather than an Eagle if I remember my history right. He didn’t like birds of prey.

Shouldn’t that gull be arrested for abusing a bald eagle?

You or I would.

The prey looks rather large, but do you suppose it is the fledgling of the gull trying to stop the eagle? Do you know of some other reason the gull would go after the eagle?

Gulls and eagles battle it out all the time. Big flocks of gulls drive off eagles. However, weak/young/unfocused gulls are prey for eagles.

Gulls eat fish, eagles eat fish, eagle eats gull leaving more fish for eagles. Gull runs because it wants to live to eat more fish, fights eagle who is eating gulls’ food, doesn’t give a crap who eagle eats as long as not him or his fish.

Saw the same thing in my back yard with a Red Tail Hawk v Robin encounter.

It was kind of cool to watch the Hawk do what it needs to do to survive, but also sad to see how distressed that Robin was seeing her mate being devoured.

But why does this particular gull chase the eagle over another gull? The gull does not want to eat the other bird, right? Do you mean that the gull wants to just chase off the eagle, and it just happened to be while the eagle had another gull in its grasp?

The chasing gull does not care about the prey gull, but only about driving off the hated eagle. Eagle gone, more fish for chasing gull who knows that as long as eagle has prey gull clutched in its claws, he is free to harass the eagle with impunity.
