John Guillermin, a prolific British director best known for blockbusters like the 1974 disaster movie The Towering Inferno and the 1976 remake of King Kong, died on Sunday at his home in Topanga, Calif. He was 89.
The cause was a heart attack, his wife, Mary Guillermin, said.
In addition to big-budget extravaganzas, Mr. Guillermin (the name is French, but he pronounced it GILL-er-min) directed a raft of films in various genres from the end of the 1940s until he retired from filmmaking in the 1980s.

Appears he was the director of “Tarzan’s Greatest Adventure” (1959).
That was a really good one.

Towering Inferno was one of the first "grown-up" movies I saw in a theatre. I was about 12 at the time. Seems so long ago. That was an era of disaster movies. "Earthquake" and "Poseidon Adventure" are other ones I remember seeing. Then when "Airplane" came along and made fun of the whole genre, they didn't get made so much anymore.
The real life events of 9/11 pretty much showed that when a fire breaks out in a skyscraper, the results are ugly and the people above the fire are pretty much screwed.

LOL, as they say.
Wikipedia is great and combined with these digital TV channels that show old moves I’ve learned a lot about our popular culture history.
I never knew just how many hack directors there have been.
There’ve been a lot.

Great entertainment!
If they made it today, all the male roles would be women and the men would be huddled in that elevator, lol.
The old couple would be gay and someone would be trans-something.

Good movie. I’ve been watching OLD movies on t.v. lately. -
Husband & I quit going to movies years ago; haven’t missed
them. We did go to one of those ape movies two or so years
ago. Don’t know why; don’t like sitting on those seats in
the theater.

And Paul Newman, William Holden, Richard Chamberlain, Robert Vaughn.
All before they revealed their politics and sex lives.
