Dog shot by Florida City police officer

FLORIDA CITY, Fla. -A woman from Florida City is outraged after she said a police officer knocked on her front door Tuesday morning and shot her dog when it ran outside.

The dog's owner, Gillian Palacios, told Local 10 News that the officer knocked on her door at 832 SW Seventh St. to inform her that she had left her car door open.

She said her 2-year-old, 40-pound bulldog-mix Duchess, ran outside and was shot three times in the head by the officer.

Palacios said the officer told her, "Your dog charged me," and then left, telling her that Animal Services would be by to pick up the dog.

"She was curious. She wasn't barking (and) she wasn't growling," Palacios said. "There was no reason for him to think she was aggressive in any way."

The Palacios family fosters and rescues dogs in the area and said it was barbaric how the officer killed their rescue dog.

"There were a million things he could have done other that shoot her three times in the head," Palacios said.Florida City police spokesman Officer Ken Armenteros confirmed that one of the department's officers shot a dog Tuesday morning, and said the police department is "gathering all the facts at this time."

"We don't have the luxury of hind sight," Armenteros said. "We have to use the information that is given to us in a split second. So, the officer has to make that decision with the information that he has available."

But none as fun for the cop.

A citizen would be hauled to jail for this.

The officer could have closed the door and left.

Is that right? I’m not watching that video, so I’ll take your word for it.

Had to go back and look to see the cat. He knew to hide from the cop in the bushes, and booked when the shooting started. Probably set the dog up...

**”We don’t have the luxury of hind sight,” Armenteros said. “We have to use the information that is given to us in a split second. So, the officer has to make that decision with the information that he has available.”**

So, that same rationale should apply to me (equal protection under the law) if I shoot someone in my home, or outside my home. If it is OK for police to kill to prevent a dangerous situation, it should be allowable for the public.

And why in the world, didnt he simply shut the car door, and go on about his way?!

Good Heavens....

Best I can figure, they’re trained to shoot any dog running towards them in police academy training.

The officer did not have himself under control. He pulls out his gun when he hears the dog *barking*, before the door is even opened.

Two people are at the door when he shoots.thankfully, they are not hit.

Had the first creature coming out of the house been a child, El Terminator would have opened fire, because he was already mentally prepped to kill,

Which is more dangerous-—a tail wagging dog greeting a stranger or a government employee who has already decided that he is entitled to kill?

A college student delivering pizza can handle that situation with far more professionalism.

Resllly, so pulling out your gun before a door opens is making a “split second decision”, now?

If a non cop went to a cop’s house and pulled out his gun when he heard the cop’s dog barking, would he receive the same soft gloved treatment?

My dogs do not have access to the front door unless I intentionally grant it.

In fact, the actual door to the outside is one of 3 doors they have to go through to even seen the front yard.

No ‘accidental’ running outdoors.

I am deeply sorry this lady’s house is not like my own.

Poor dog.

It seems the current police force is filled with the power mad, certainly not the type of personnel we used to get before the whining class got the admission standards changed. Today if you call the police you are in danger. Be prepared folks to protect yourself and don’t depend on the so-called, “ To Serve and Protect.”

Sort of the like dead guy who was waiting for a tow truck. That was also in Florida.

Cops need to seriously police themselves, or the will get policed. And they won’t like it.

As a kid, I grew up with GSD’s. Anyone who has experience with GSD’s knows that when there is someone at the door, it’s game on.

Consequently, it was drilled into me by my parents to NEVER open the door without the dog under firm control, mostly for liability reasons.

This owner should have had the dog under control, can’t say the officer is to blame on this one by what the short vid clip shows......would be nice if there was some sound to go with the video for some better context.
