iPhone 6s goes on sale in Samsung’s home market to long queues; earlier online pre-order sellout

The iPhone 6s/Plus seems pretty popular already in Samsung’s home market of Korea, despite only going on sale today. All three major carriers earlier reported that they quickly sold out when the new iPhones were made available for pre-order on Monday. Now Patently Apple notes queues of hundreds of people at retail stores, with some having waited in line for 24 hours …

Lines of hundreds of iPhones 6s purchasers in Korea

Local brands Samsung and LG were clearly concerned, having both dropped the prices of their flagship devices prior to the iPhone 6s/Plus going on sale in Korea, and Samsung making its Galaxy Note 5 available in a similar pink color to Apple’s rose gold. The Korea Herald reports that more than 30% of iPhone 6s/Plus pre-orders were for rose gold models.

Samsung and Apple enjoy a rather uneasy relationship as both competitors and partners, the two having had endless patent battles in court while the company is one of two suppliers of the A9 chip used in the latest iPhones.

The new iPhones went on sale in India and Malaysia last week, with Apple promising they will be on sale in more than 130 countries by the end of the year.

I really don’t understand people like this. Why would you wait in line for over an hour (24?!) jut for a phone? Or an xBox? Seriously..

I’m with you. I’m sure these gadgets are fun to play with and maybe even useful to some extent, but I don’t get why a person would spend that kind of money for a phone. More time and more money than sense, imho. I’ll keep my flip phone, thanks.

Its all good because Samsung outsells Apple in Europe and America. Same with the new Microsoft Surface laptops and tablets out-distancing what the boys in the band from Cupertino are currently selling. Via the hard sell btw! As in, buy it for your children in university or the LBGTs will beat the bejezus out of them.

Well I can understand why someone would want the latest and greatest (even though for Apple that just means you’re their official beta tester), but what’s so hard about waiting a week for inventory to restock? It’s not like Apple only plans to make 10k of them, and that’s it. There will be more chances to get one!

Eh, I’m not quite a flip-phone guy, I had a Samsung Captivate (original Galaxy S) for about 4 years, got it free as part of a RadioShack deal. Once it was finally run over by a Humvee, I had to get a ‘new’ one, so now I’m running an Xperia Z3 compact. Most phones nowadays are way too big for me.

In what way is it better than a ten year old Motorola RAZR?

Any iPhone is a smartphone, a miniature computer that incidentally can receive and make phone calls. The Motorola RAZR was a brain-dead flip phone.

Bzzzt, you lose, non responsive answer. You were not the one being asked, regardless.

It is not any better at being a phone, apparently it cannot make calls any better than a ten year old flip phone.

That’s true, too. Maybe they don’t have a life or somethin. I don’t mean that as condescending as it sounds, I swear. Nor did I mean my post as a put down- just not for me. Could be it’s just what floats their boat and everybody needs something special to look forward to. shrug. I had an android phone for a few months after T Mobile went south. I hated it. Teeny, tiny keys and Qwerty on top of it. lol I had to use a flashlight tomake a call. I’m still struggling with texting on my flipper, but I almost never text so it’s okay. I can see the keys and the volume/ clarity is fine so I’m good. It’s gettin old, though.

More lies from our resident Baron Dennis Won Munchausen. . .

US Smartphone subscribers in US by phone maker (left) US by Smartphone subscribers by phone OS

Samsung does NOT out sell Apple in the US. . . not by a long shot. In addition, the definition of smartphone by Samsung and the other Android makers includes all of their phones, which includes feature phone lines, which are not smartphones, which was proved in court in 2013 when discovery proved that only 30% of Samsung's line of phones actually met the definition of smartphones. . . even though they reported all of them as "smartphones."

LONDON -- Samsung is still the world's biggest smartphone maker in the world by a distance, but its reign is under pressure as the company is expected to record its first-ever sales decline in 2015.

According to new figures released by research company TrendForce, Samsung is on course to record its first drop in smartphone shipments since it began selling these devices. "Samsung has lost much of its shares in the low-end to mid-range markets to Chinese competitors. TrendForce therefore anticipates that the vendor will see its first ever decline of annual smartphone shipments in 2015, with a 1 percent year-on-year drop and around 323.5 million units shipped," analyst Avril Wu said.

One of the reasons for this yearly drop is the worse-than-expected performance of the company's flagship devices, including the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge+. TrendForce previously predicted annual shipments of the Galaxy S range to be around 45 million, but it has now revised that figure downwards by more than 10 percent to 40 million units. A recent guidance note from Samsung predicted an 80 percent jump in profits in the third quarter of 2015, but rather than being the result of increased smartphone sales, it is the result of a weaker South Korean won.

Samsung's decline is a reflection of an overall slowdown in growth of the smartphone market, with Wu saying that with the global economy projected to decelerate in the second half of 2015, smartphone shipments are expected to remain weak until the middle of 2016. The smartphone market is set to grow by just 9.3 percent in 2015, down from 26.5 percent in 2014, and it is predicted to slow down further to 7.7 percent in 2016.

Besides facing a huge challenge at the mid-to-low end of the market from a growing number of Chinese manufacturers, Samsung is struggling to compete with the world's most valuable company -- Apple Inc. -- at the premium end of the market. The launch of the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus will have a direct impact on Samsung's sales, with TrendForce's analysts saying the new smartphones have "captivated consumers with its 3D Touch technology and rose gold exterior."

While Samsung is expected to record its first drop in overall shipments in 2015, Apple is likely to see a growth of 16 percent with about 223.7 million iPhones shipped by the end of the year.

As for your claims about Microsoft's Surface Laptops and tablets outdistancing Apple's tablets and laptops, your clams are twaddle. The latest figures show you are lying again, from the Wall Street Journal of July 22, 2015:

Microsoft Surfaces Tablet Gains
While Microsoft’s second-quarter results were a dud with investors, there was a nugget of good news when it came to its tablets

Microsoft’s latest results showed it is gaining traction in the tablet business. Here, Microsoft’s Surface 3 is seen in Tokyo. PHOTO: RODRIGO REYES MARIN/AFLO/ZUMA PRESS

Microsoft’s fiscal fourth-quarter results fell flat with investors. But buried in the numbers was an interesting tidbit: The software giant seems to have finally found a niche in tablets.

Microsoft said sales of its Surface tablets totaled $888 million for the most recent quarter. That brings the company’s tablet line to about $3.6 billion in revenue for the fiscal year ended June 30.

That measures up with only about 15% of Apple’s iPad revenue for the same period, showing that Apple still dominates the tablet business.

Just 15% of the iPad market . . . and that doesn't even mention Apple's 90% domination of the high-end market of notebooks. What are you smoking. Your all inclusive, delusional claims are pipe-dreams.

It is not any better at being a phone, apparently it cannot make calls any better than a ten year old flip phone.

An iPhone actually can make calls better than a Motorola RAZR. I had a Motorola RAZR once. . . the iPhone is far more functional than was the RAZR as a phone. However, if your criteria for buying a cellular phone is merely that, then, by all means, go find a ten year old phone, and see how well it still makes phone calls on modern networks.

By the way, doorgunner, this is a public forum. . . not a private conversation between you and Tau Food. If you wanted to ask privately, you can ask privately on Freepmail and get a private answer.

Xiaomi is China’s best yet and also outsells Apple in China-Asia

There was a time when Freepers said "Buy American". Now the message from some like dennisw is "Buy communist" or "Buy Korean". Don't people want to support American companies anymore, especially an innovative American tech giant? To hell with the communists, I'll never buy their stuff no matter how well they copy our inventors.

More delusional lies, Baron. Even you know, except for your delusions, that Samsung makes much slower devices, with much less security than Apple.

Apple iPhone 6S, iPad Air 2, and even a two year old iPhone 5S,
blows the doors off of all Android devices in overall speed.

The data above is provided by independent, unbiased tests performed by Anandtech. . . and prove your claims to be delusional falsehoods.
