CIRP: Over 100 million iPhones now in use in U.S.A.
Mac Daily News ^ | November 19, 2015

Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, LLC (CIRP), today released research on the installed based of iPhones in the USA.

CIRP finds that as of the end of the September 2015 quarter, 101 million iPhones were in use in the USA, including 58 million iPhone 6 and 6 Plus and 4 million iPhone 6s and 6s Plus models (Chart 1).

“The analysis shows the continued strength of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, now one year old,” said Mike Levin, Partner and Co-Founder of CIRP, in the statement. “We estimate a combined 60 million of these flagship phones sold in the US from the September 2014 launch through September 30, 2015. For comparison, the iPhone 5S sold about 28 million in the same period in 2013-2014. With only a weekend of availability in the quarter, we estimate 4 million of the new iPhone 6s and 6s Plus sold in the US.”

CIRP: Installed base of iPhones by model, Dec. 2012 - Sept. 2015

By analyzing data on iPhone buyers, their new model selection, and their prior phones, and overlaying Apple iPhone sales data adjusted to the US market, CIRP estimates the number and model of iPhones in use each quarter. This installed base grew on average 8% per quarter for the past eight quarters. In the September 2015 quarter, the installed base grew 4%, compared to 6% in the September 2014 quarter.

“The data again shows that growth in the installed base of iPhones in the US has slowed,” said Josh Lowitz, Partner and Co-Founder of CIRP, in a statement. “In previous quarters, we saw the installed base grow by as much as 17%, in the December 2013 quarter after the launch of the iPhone 5S and 5C. As the US market matures, Apple has fewer first- time smartphone buyers to add to their base, and faces the challenge of attracting loyal Android users.”

CIRP bases its findings on its September 2015 survey of US Apple customers. CIRP samples 500 customers that purchased an Apple product (iPhone, iPad, or Mac computer) in the preceding quarter. Further information on CIRP, which provides securities research to the investment community using advanced consumer market research strategies, methods, and techniques, is at www.cirpllc.com.

I would suppose the other 200 million people who do not have iphones are mostly made up of women and minorities and thus are hardest hit

Women and minorities seem the most likely groups to use Iphones, in my experience.

Whatever. I’ve gotten along fine without Apple Anything. But then, I’d rather ride my Triumph than stare at a smartphone. I’d rather go shooting than stare at a computer screen. Technology is wonderful and if one has a business, vital, but jeez, give it a rest some time people. There’s a whole world out there to see, hear and feel with your senses.

I dunno. I like educating myself and knowing what’s up on a variety of subjects. On Free Republic, we kind of pride ourselves on being able to discern truth from fantasy. At least, that’s how I see it (except on a few topics that have gotten me banned in the past.). Otherwise, let’s get all sides on this forum and have a good debate!

“Whatever” is exactly right. Who give’s red rat’s rear-end about what kind of phone I have? Verizon recently upgraded me to an Android Turbo (no cost) but I couldn’t care less. I’m too damn busy to sit on my ass staring at my phone and all the damn apps that came with it. As long as it allows me to make / receive phone calls, send/receive texts or allow me to read my email on occasion, I’m good.

This whole tech craze is for the birds.

LOL! Verizon keeps trying to get me to “upgrade” my old flipphone. Never! No data plans for me. If I need the ‘net my desktop is at home when I get there, if I remember. My phone lasts 4 days on a full charge. You can still get a dumbphone but it costs extra now. You save it back real fast without a data plan.

The natural disposition is always to believe. It is acquired wisdom and experience only that teach incredulity, and they very seldom teach it enough. The wisest and most cautious of us all frequently gives credit to stories which he himself is afterwards both ashamed and astonished that he could possibly think of believing.

The man whom we believe is necessarily, in the things concerning which we believe him, our leader and director, and we look up to him with a certain degree of esteem and respect. But as from admiring other people we come to wish to be admired ourselves; so from being led and directed by other people we learn to wish to become ourselves leaders and directors. . . .

The desire of being believed, the desire of persuading, of leading and directing other people, seems to be one of the strongest of all our natural desires. — Adam Smith, Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759)

I consider FR to be nonpareil as a place for people who do not wish to be cynical, but who know that what Smith called “incredulity” - skepticism - is in short supply. We come to FR to pool our “incredulity” - about any topic and also about cynicism regarding any topic.

BS.

The iPhone 3GS 32 GB - Unlocked is selling for $240 on Amazon.

If there were 100 million iPhones in circulation, the 3GS should be selling for $24.95.

The claim of 100,000,000 is true. Amazon is ridiculous to be selling a six and a half year old iPhone model for $240. . . when you can buy a 32GB unlocked iPhone 3GS on eBay for anywhere from $35 to $100. Here's a random example:

Apple iPhone 3GS for sale right now on eBay

Apple has sold 1.1 BILLION iOS devices in the world. Add in the 125 million iOS driven iPod touces that were not counted by The Motley Fool, and the number becomes more than 1.225 Billion. Over 700,000,000 of that 1.225 Billioon are later model iPhones. Why do you then have a problem with believing that 100,000,000 of them are being used in the United States, Apple's home and primary market where the iPhone has been on sale for over 8 years? This number comports quite well with the percentage of iPhone users being reported by the carriers.

"(Apple) iPhones captured 44.2% market share among U.S. smartphone subscribers aged 13 and older based on a three-month average ending July 2015, an increase of 1.1 percentage points over the preceding three month average. -- Sep 3, 2015

Source comScore

Wikipedia lists that there are 327,577,529 cellular phones in use in the United States. 44.2% of those should be Apple iPhones according to the statistics reported by the carriers. However, a lot of those cellular phones in use are still dumb flip phones or plain candy bar phones. . . that's estimated to be somewhere around 65,000,000, so let's subtract those dumb phones from the 327,577,529 - 65,000,000 = 262,577,529. 44.2% of that number of smarter phones is ~116,000,000. Ergo, Sgt. Dave, 100 million Apple iPhones is not out of the question, in fact, it is a low estimate. Heck, Sarge, Apple sold 48.6 MILLION iPhones in just the last quarter alone!

In addition, Apple iPhones hold their value far longer than do any other cellular phones. You find this astounding? Why? They are still useful and in demand by consumers far longer than others that simply do not last as long. Otherwise, Sarge, why would Amazon be even be thinking they could sell a six year old iPhone which does not even have 4G technology for that much money????

What is America’s entire population right now?

I am not sure this number can be correct.

Wow that is the exact model I have. I bought it shortly after it was introduced in 2009. I paid full price since I calculated that was the cheapest way to go. If I had taken a plan with a discounted price it would have cost over $1000 more over the course of the plan. Still have it and use it. Still on pay as you go at $11.30 a month including tax. Fits my needs exactly. Someday I will upgrade but not yet. I am surprised it still retails for that much though since there have been 6 new models introduced since I got it.
