That really annoyed me when Trump made those comments about Gellar, especially since I attended that event solely to defend freedom of speech against sharia. I was also annoyed at Cruz with his comments about Trump.

Perfect example of the fools who don’t get Trump.

He is a doer.
He doesn’t see the point in a coloring contest. He gets right to the problem:

BAN MUSLIMS!

Which method do you choose?

“pre-candidate”

End of story.

THAT’s the excuse? So... because he’s a candidate now he no longer “feels” that way? Is that the excuse you’re peddling?

Make no mistake, I support Geller, and anyone else in America for free speech, but to compare the two is unfair, and incorrect. I reject Muslims or any other religion coming to blows or worse for differing opinions on Religion. But one must admit, that Gellers in-your-face out and out daring, could be dangerous to her. I don’t think that equates to anything Trump said.

Have I been careful enough?

Funny how the Trump supporting cast here thinks he should not be held accountable for any position, or anything he has ever said or done. Truly the Twilight Zone here.

Just when I start to think of possibly voting for Trump another one of his statements gets out.

Criticizing someone’s action IS free speech...

For sure. My point was not that Trump did something ethically wrong when he criticized Geller, but that the criticism itself was flawed.

And I understand that good people can disagree on that. I suppose it all depends on where you draw the line when determining if a speech (or an event) is deliberately trying to cause violence, as opposed to just trying to being provocative.

I try to draw that line to give free speech as much leeway possible.

“You want to fly the Confederate flag as an official govt flag then join the party it belongs to - the Democrats.”

Hmm, telling people from the only solid Republic bastion left to join the Democrat party... I’m not sure that’s going to work out for us...

Having a cartoon contest is in-your-face out and out daring someone? Are you a Muslim?

I would like to remind everyone that a police officer was shot at the Pam Geller event. The police officer (traffic cop directing traffic) noticed suspicious activity and acted promptly. The 2 suspects died. It could have been a lot worse if the suspects had made it into the event. Seeing that there was recent violence over such cartoons, Ms Geller knew, like all of us would, that such a contest would cause controversy. I don’t think Ms Geller used her best judgment. I am also disgusted with the image of Jesus made from urine or the Virgin Mary made out of condoms. But free speech is free speech. I would say anyone who disrupts free speech should be punched in the face.

Trump, however, positioned himself as more practical and less enthusiastic about taking ideological leaps.

‘They can’t do something else? They have to be in the middle of Texas, doing something on Muhammad and insulting everybody?’ he boomed

‘And it’s disgusting what happened and we have to be very strong, but it looks to me like she’s somebody that is just taunting them.’

‘And you know, I’m one that believes in free speech, probably more than she does,’ Trump continued.

‘But what’s the purpose of this? So she’s taunting them. She’s – probably, it’s risky for her. I don’t know – maybe she likes risk. But what the hell is she doing, and what is the purpose of it?’

Gellar’s staged provocation was not “ wrong” but then, what was her intention? To create and showcase another example of muslim intolerance.

Then what? Then what?

Trump is a business guy. He makes deals. He has to handle adversarial interests and pull out a deal. Maybe both sides get something, maybe just his side wins. I think he tends toward win- win but never Lose.

He already said in the case of Israel vs Palestine that if both sides don't think he is fair, he can't make a deal between them. That's gonna make the hard core on both sides unhappy. But it is speaking real common sense truth

Fact is Gellar doesn't have the goal of being the President of the US of all the people, and of having to bring them together or at worst case, make them safe from each other.

She is an activist, he is a candidate for the US presidency. The U.S. president will never approve of or participate In a stunt to deliberately provoke a religious or ethnic group. Like approving of the Klan sheeting up for a parade. Free speech aye. Useful speech no

That doesn't mean he can or will stop provocative free expression it, but he may criticize it as not useful at best

If his saying so offends a special snowflake as a personal attack, they will just have to tough it out. He isn't going to apologize for hurting their feeeelings

KELLY: Let’s talk about free speech because after that Pam Geller event down in Garland, Texas, where they were attacked and the two would-be Jihadi’s were shot dead by the police force, you also sent out some tweets saying why taunt in order to provoke possible death? Dumb in that moment.

TRUMP: I think Pam Geller is a terrible messenger. I think she’s terrible. We have enough problems without taunting and driving everybody crazy.

KELLY: But my question to you is, because this turned into a bigger thing, like what do we stand for as Americans if not for freedom of speech, ability to express yourself, this speech in particular which was in defiance, it’s like the cartoon that won the contest it had Muhammad standing there saying you can’t draw me and the person looking up to him saying, that’s why I draw you. It was about people trying to shut down an American ideal and this group, however unsympathetic they may have been, saying, we reject that attempt.

TRUMP: They were totally unsympathetic. Now, you look at Muhammad and you look at some of the positions they have Muhammad and some people are going to get extremely upset about it. Now, I’m not the only one and I’m not the only Conservative Republican that feels this way. They’re lucky to be alive. Why with all the problems we have, why taunt?
