In 1976 a good portion of the Christian Right based their vote on the overt expressions of faith by one of the candidates- Jimmy Carter.
In 1980 they still had the chance to vote for Carter the Sunday School teacher over the once divorced former movie star Ronald Reagan.
Basing a vote on outward expressions of faith by a candidate isn’t a guarantee that you are doing anything good for the country.
And although Reagan wasn’t a Catholic, in the eyes of the Catholic Church he was always validly married to Nancy.
