It does sound like something no intelligent person would put in writing, and she clearly is that. Maybe there was a vague directive to not be concerned “rumors which are spread by our competitors” or something like that, which staffers might have interpreted as pertaining to affairs.
People are terrible at keeping secrets, so if it exists, I can’t imagine someone will not find a reason to leak it.
If anything, she’s the smarter of the two in that couple. They don’t hire dullards at the National Security Council or big financial companies.
