Q&A: Chicago teachers to strike over contract, budget

CHICAGO — Thousands of Chicago teachers plan to walk off the job for one day on Friday, shutting down schools in the nation's third-largest district in what could be an early glimpse of a more prolonged strike still to come.

Some 27,000 Chicago Teachers Union members have been working without a contract since June. They've overwhelmingly authorized an open-ended strike like the one that closed schools for more than a week in 2012, though that would still be weeks away.

The union and its allies say Friday's action is an attempt to draw attention to their fight for a new contract and better funding for a school district "on the verge of financial collapse."

Here are answers to some questions about Friday's action, and what could happen next.

WHY IS THE UNION CHOOSING A ONE-DAY STRIKE NOW?

Officially, the union says it's protesting an unfair labor practice after CPS announced in August that it would no longer pay salary increases based on length of service or educational attainment. Union President Karen Lewis says members also called for an action to protest CPS' attempts to make teachers pay more toward their pensions.

The walkout also comes shortly after schools CEO Forrest Claypool announced teachers and staff must take three furlough days to help CPS, which faces a $1.1 billion budget deficit, to manage cash flow.

The State should not give the City of Chicago one dime. These corrupt liberals got themselves into this mess, let them figure it out....alone. Good call on Bankruptcy, he knows at that time all Union contracts become null and void.....

Back in the 70’s when New York Teachers Union went on strike someone asked Albert Shanker, President of the NYC Teachers Union “What about the kids, don’t you care about the kids?” And he replied, “When school children start paying union dues, that’s when I’ll start representing the interests of school children. That’s exactly how Karen Lewis (Jabba the Hut) is like.

It would be cheaper to send every student to private school.

I’ve worked in the private sector, and have had the experience of being told to take furlough days to help the financially troubled company. I’ve also had to forego promised pay increases and promised pension or 401k payments.

Point is lots of people have experienced all of this. Chicago schools are having financial problems. Something’s got to give......

I do some side work with a high school friend of mine. I do sales for this company called 5 Star Sports. We provide tickets and posters and other spirit items for high schools and small colleges. And the tickets we provide and really professional. We’ll put live action photos of the players on the tickets and do individual games for both boys and girls basketball and football....and get this, they’re free. They’re really classy tickets. We get the advertisers to pay for them. And with the redemption they’re going to get, they line up to do it. We can do it depending on the amount of tickets between $0.04.5 to $0.05.5 per ticket. We can number them so they can figure out how many they’ve sold. Now we have had some school AD’s who don’t want anything to do with these tickets. What they’d rather do is use cheap generic tickets, stamps or no tickets at all. What I’ve been finding out is, some of these school AD’s have a teacher or wife collecting the money, which is cash and pocketing a lot of the proceeds. One new AD from a Chicago Public school, told me the old AD was fired last year for skimming 1000 tickets a game at $5.00 a pop for each home football game, which is 5 games a season. Comes out to $25,000 a season and had been doing it for at least 5 years that they know of. That’s $125,000 over 5 years. And that was just for football. They don’t know how much he made from the basketball seasons.

“Rather than allowing discussion, the Chicago Socialists had a policy that disallowed actual person-to-person interaction; rather, the moderator required that you “raise your hand in a fist” in order to be placed in line to discuss. If you didn’t raise your hand in a fist, you were placed after those who did conform and raise their hand in a fist.”.......This paragraph made me want to vomit.
