I'll tell you what. The Navy uniforms have been messed with about every five years it seems since the 1970's when they issued Navy wide an officers variant of dress blues to replace the traditional crackerjacks for enlisted ranks below Chief. In 1979 the traditional crackerjacks were finally restored. Next was the messing with the working uniform. Now coveralls makes sense on a ship for many ratings and a lot quicker to get on in event of on board emergency. But looking at them how would they be spotted in the water in a man overboard event? Keep in mind if a shipmate is in the water spotting him in a matter of second can mean the difference between life and death. But the most important part of the traditional dungaree pants work uniform was it served as part of a sailors water survival gear. In Basic they teach recruits how to make a flotation device with them. Now the next uniform promenade is messing with the covers? So everyone feels good about themselves why don't we just place Admiral Stars on all uniforms /sarcasm.

I'm gonna step on toes with this comment but I speak as a sailor who served before the new PC Navy became prevalent. WOMEN DO NOT BELONG ON COMBAT SHIPS SURFACE OR OTHERWISE. It hurts ZEBRA time. It hurts Man overboard Muster On Station which in the day was Mandatory reporting to your work center even naked just get there a shipmates life depended on an accurate muster to determine uniform and what gear they had on them. Fire Bell responses would also be slowed. I dressed many a time answering the fire bell dressing while running to the repair locker. The Navy is no place for social engineering.

Thirteen button trousers ...
**************************
When I served, the blues had 13 buttons. The later uniforms had zippers and were really baggy; actually looking like they had been slept in for several days. ...I think the zippered trousers were put in to accommodate the more obese following generations of sailors. They looked horrible.

After that they went back to 13 buttons. But not practical for the pregnant ones who should not be there to begin with.
