AP Poll: Negative view of Trump now nears 70 percent

An Associated Press-GfK Poll released Thursday finds Donald Trump’s “unfavorable” numbers are nearing 70 percent. The AP reports:

Seven in 10 people, including close to half of Republican voters, have an unfavorable view of Trump, according to a new Associated Press-GfK poll. It’s an opinion shared by majorities of men and women; young and old; conservatives, moderates and liberals; and whites, Hispanics and blacks — a devastatingly broad indictment of the billionaire businessman.

Even in the South, a region where Trump has won GOP primaries decisively, close to 70 percent view him unfavorably. And among whites without a college education, one of Trump’s most loyal voting blocs, 55 percent have a negative opinion.

It’s worth noting that none of the top candidates are above water in this poll. Ted Cruz is at 26-59 and Hillary Clinton is at 40-55. Still, Trump has the highest negatives and those numbers seem to have shifted some time in the last month:

Trump AP poll

As you can see, Trump’s unfavorable numbers have been hovering in the high 50s since last July. Again, that’s roughly where Ted Cruz and Hillary Clinton are now. But the current poll shows a 13 point jump in the “very unfavorable” numbers as well as a 6 point drop in the total favorable numbers. Not surprisingly, the number of people who say they would not vote for Trump also jumped upward in this poll:

What’s not clear is why Trump’s unfavorable numbers are peaking at this moment. Yes, he had a bad week in the media but when hasn’t he had a bad week in the media? It seemed for months that none of his comments or Twitter attacks could damage him, but the poll suggests something has changed recently. Was it the attack on Ted Cruz’s wife that was a bridge too far? Was it his comments on abortion last week? Without knowing what it is that did the damage how can he try to recover?

Respondents to the AP poll even rated Ted Cruz more honest than Trump. Asked if the word “honest” described each candidate, 56 percent said it did not at all describe Trump compared to 36 percent who said the same for Cruz. Trump has taken to calling Cruz “Lyin’ Ted” in public appearances for the past several weeks.

The good news for Trump is that he appears to be crushing both of his rivals in New York, with a Monmouth poll this week showing him breaking 50 percent. A convincing win in his home state could help rally his supporters and maybe give him a chance to turn some of these unfavorable numbers around before the convention.

You Trumpsters are amazing. Do those rose colored glasses work on other things other than Trump?

Not a "Trumpster", but a realist. Also a Cruz voter. I am very glad to see delegates for both because I want one of the two. Cruz has some weaknesses, mainly that he lacks Trump's populism. But he makes up for that in values and I support him wholeheartedly.

But unlike Trump, Cruz has yet to have the Washington Post endorsement (Stalin, Pol Pot) or the Pope endorsement or any other big endorsements. It will be interesting to see how he handles them. Trump handled them perfectly.

You’ve changed the premise of the argument. What’s wrong with SE Asia defending themselves? It’s been 70 years. The world is more allied than it has ever been.

The media thinks they are gaining action with their push polls.

There appears to be about 33 percent of Americans who are perhaps planning on surviving the coming CV2+3 eruptions.

Our form of government requires blood to maintain liberty and limit the powers of the government. The founders knew this. They were not stupid. They were right. And because the loved us, their progeny, they told us up front.

Peaceful transitions of power cannot transition from gay orgies on every tv show, to the “leave it to beaver” hour complete with norman rockwell paintings of America, without the pajama boys crapping their diapers and rioting over what they fear worse than death.

They seem to feel they are being micro aggressed by the raping of Gaia caused by you and me walking in the grass within our own front yards.

the very shape of a grahm cracker that some little boy bites out piece by piece to artistically create an edible toy gun... TERRIFIES their sensitivities.
“Those parents are abusive, they let their children make guns out of crackers.” CALL Children’s services.

I wonder if there is any peaceful way to turn this around in our lifetimes... and what I see with my common sense, well, it ain’t purdy. In fact, some of us may get hurt... sooner or later.

I remember Jeff Head at Klamath here on this site in a previous incarnation... and there was at least some government servants who did the right thing... I doubt there are any of those men left.

This is due to his comment about punishing women who have abortions. It just doesn’t go over well with a large majority of the female population and even a number of Democrat male crossover voters.

BS poll. He would not have people voting for him if he was as negative as these “experts” say.

The media keep hammering away; they can’t stand anyone on the Right being popular.
************************************
That would explain why the media have given Trump so much free coverage on TV and have given Cruz only a small fraction of that amount of time. The liberal media don’t like Cruz because he is a Conservative, but they pump Trump 24/7.

This is why people are standing in line for 3 hours to vote for Trump in the primary: because they hate him so much....

This line of reasoning is stupid. I intend to vote for Trump, gladly, if he gets the nomination, but these polls are very worrisome. To simply disregard them is infantile and assinine.

Good grief, this is going to be our nominee? Trump supporters don’t see this, or just refuse to see it.

As Hillary is enjoying her 300+ electoral vote victory, the Trump supporters will be blaming us Cruz supporters for not doing enough to get Trump elected.

I was so hoping that Trump would be as likable as Mittens.

And I was hoping that Trump would be as Conservative as Mitt. But that's not the case.

I am SO thankful for one reasoned, intelligent, insightful comment on the thread.

Political rallies are the ultimate form of cherry picking among general voters. If the rally attendees represent even 15% of the general voting population it would be a surprise.

I’ve been on the Trump Train almost from the beginning of his campaign. However, since he won Arizona, it’s been a nightmare. First, he took over a week off, then sent the retweet including Heidi Cruz, then the Corey Lewandowski arrest, then the Chris Matthews’ abortion debacle—and then crushing defeat in Wisconsin. Now, after one NY rally, more days in retreat. This from a man who criticizes Romney for vanishing during the General election last time.
I do agree, he needs to listen to Melania and Ivanka. He was magnificent at AIPAC (when he used a teleprompter for the first time). When can we expect to hear the other speeches he has promised?? Too, he does have a plethora of beautiful personal stories to tell of his philanthropic and humanitarian efforts. He got off to a heartwarming start in Wisconsin when the terminally ill former Miss Wisconsin Melissa Young left her hospital bed to attend his rally and testify to how he had reached out to help her and educate her son. She mentioned how he had sent her a handwritten letter and he left the stage to embrace her. She also attended and spoke after Melania at a subsequent rally.
Mr. Trump is a genuinely kind and extraordinarily generous man; I just wish he would convey that and dispense with all the vitriol!!!
His campaign theme speaks to Americans who are angry—but now is the time he needs to shift gears and embody more of a spirit of hope and good will! The main drawing power of Mr. Trump’s campaign for me—as a nigh 56-yr-old lifelong democrat who has known terrorism for my entire adult life—is my fervent belief and trust that he will be able to combat these threats and protect me. I sincerely feel he has the insight to make our country and world safer!! He simply has so much to offer in so many positive ways, it’s a shame he refuses to take the high road.
Finally, as I sit here tonight, bewildered and depressed at the state of his flagging campaign, I pray that we will soon be seeing the Donald Trump depicted in your second photo asap and a great deal less of the first one!

Yawn.

Maybe you should worry more about your Open Borders/PACpaid/career govt employee/politician, his globalist Bush/Romney friends and the $500K his PAC gave to Snarly’s PAC, and spend less time posting Trump attacks.
