The roots of the plants left holes in the soil, which were filled with plaster of paris, similarly to the way human-shaped effigies were obtained from Pompeii. This allowed the plants to be identified, and the Roman-era gardens reproduced here and there.
House of the Golden Cupids peristylum -- In the early days the ground of the peristylum was used as a kitchen garden. In a second phase these areas became small gardens adding to the beauty of the building, but some of them had trees providing figs, lemons, apples and cherries to the family.

Those are the houses of the 1%ers. Most people lived in two room flats.
