Mesh networking may serve to deter a complete takeover (central command and control) of the server system. Removing DNS for 2 days was fun last week... right?
One way of looking at mesh is as messaging by a bucket brigade, at least close to the two end nodes wanting to communicate. With more buckets and branches, exponential propagation could carry messaging to all devices participating. The shortcoming is the range and speed of single devices one-to-another. The guys working the Pirate Bay type angle know about decentralized serving of content, and could likely scrounge a secondary network.
Addendum: Multiple networks is a possibility which has not been sufficiently addressed in finding a community solution for redundant communications. The devices in our hands can be coaxed into communicating one with another, without an internet connection or cell tower signal.
The range is more limited without cell or internet connections, unless operating in a densely populated area, with enough devices to provide continuous geographic coverage. The benefit is more difficulty shutting down a network without the dependence of a central point to coordinate traffic flow.
