TX: Dallas Wal-Mart Has .22 LR in Stock Below 7 Cents per Round (Is it gone yet? LOL!)

Wall-Mart .22 rimfire has been uncommon for three years now. When President Obama pushed for more infringements on the Second Amendment, starting in 2013, the demand for .22 rimfire skyrocketed. Instead of raising prices on the ammunition sufficiently to bring demand down to reasonable levels, manufacturers tried to keep prices stable to earn customer good will. It failed as a strategy. With the demand so high, less public entrepreneurs purchased all the .22 they could obtain, then offered it over the Internet, at gun shows, and other venues, at three to four times the price purchased. The producers stayed with their artificially low price policy, and the middlemen made money.

We’ve had .22lr in Dallas all along. Never haven’t been able to buy some.

Good thing there are low gas prices.

The trip from CA to TX will be cheaper.

Notice I did not mention a return trip.

I saw A box of 325 rounds of .22 LR in a Richmond VA area Walmart yesterday for $18.97, just under .06 a round.
That was the first .22LR I have seen in a Walmart around gere for 2 years.

Got it for 8 cents a round at the local gun show. Still about twice the pre-panic buying.

Our Wally World gets it occasionally at about .06 per round.

Once in awhile I luck into finding a brick.

With diligence my stockpile has grown... not as much as I’d like, but I’m in way better shape than two or three years ago.

Ha! Urban legend and seeing is believing.

I've looked and I haven't seen a .22 round for sale in a Walmart since obama took office.

A) Manufacturers raised their prices; you didn’t see it in shelf prices as so many distributors went out of business over the last few years, half from retirement, the other half from the pressures of the economy crashing.

B) The shortages weren’t because of limited manufacturing, but limited distribution. Walmart did not, until recently, purchase ammo directly, they bought from distributors (like almost everyone did.) As there are only two major distributors left, and neither have any intention of feeding the big box general merchandise stores, they have now started sending their trucks to get filled at ammo makers.

C) The constant whining that I’ve seen online from people saying that people are buying cheap ammo and selling it at a much higher markup doesn’t match the production numbers on the ammo being sold - those prices were from recently made ammo which accurately reflected prices from the manufacturer. As one of the major components and variables in ammo sales is down (the prices of commodities like lead and diesel fuel used to transport heavy materials...), the prices are going to start dropping for a while. If lead climbs back up into the dollar range again, you will again see prices skyrocket.

So, yes, Walmart has 22 rimfire again, they likely will continue to have a good supply for quite a while, your local gun store will still have up priced ammo as it was purchased when lead was over a dollar a pound and gas prices were much higher, and it will take time for that drop in price to come to the dealer.

A rimfire ammunition plant requires a priming area that is something that has not been newly fabricated in the United States probably for 40 years. The big American ammunition makers have updated theirs, but they have not added any brand-new facilities at new locations (Winchester did move its rimfire plant from Illinois to Mississippi). It is the priming operation of rimfire ammunition manufacture that takes the large amount of production time.

Every .22 owner should also have a .308 in safe too.
