I’m kidding with you!

And there are few things I fear as much as I fear auto-correct.

It’s gotten me into quite a few jams.

:-)

Listened to an interview with “Lucy” the well known USGS spokesperson, who recently retired.

She said she is free to study whatever earthquake she choses, now.

Pointed out that “plate tectonics” is just a few decades old as a theory/discipline.

...have a good time when a natural disaster strikes?

No, we have a great time with doom and gloom threads. None have ever panned out, in case you haven't noticed.

As indicated by the Mayan sacred calendar, the world ended in December 2012, so future catastrophes are plainly gratuitous, and ought to be denied attention.

Are earthquakes part of the weather patterns? If so, maybe this earthquake prediction business could be lumped under meteorology. And as is immediately obvious, meteorology is the study of meteors.

Big meteors hitting the earth cause earthquakes, or something.

And thus it becomes part of “climate Change”.

There often is a correlation between earthquakes in Japan and earthquakes on the opposite side of the Pacific.

That was the pattern in 1906: first Japan, then Ecuador, then San Francisco.

Whether this is anything more than coincidence is unknown.

Likewise, the effect of the gravitational pull of the moon on the tides, and on the tectonic plates, is unknown.

But California is overdue for a major quake; the earth’s mantle is currently unstable (lots of volcanic activity); and whether this too is normal or portends anything unusual is unknown.

But, that said, Californians should be prepared for a major quake. The Japanese lost only around 50 dead; Nepal lost thousands. That’s the difference preparedness makes.

(And in Japan, there was no looting)

Both the moon and the sun exert some gravitational forces on the Earth... and us on them!

During a new moon, the sun and moon are directly pulling in the same direction, exactly lined up:

S——m-—E

During a full moon, they pull in exact opposite directions:

S————E-—m

So there is some theory that the directional conjuction of the pull of the sun and the moon combine particularly strong during the full and new moons.

But the statistical analysis doesn’t really support that theory. Only marginally.
