I meant to suggest along those lines. I worked in Petroleum engineering in 1971 when the Saugus earthquake hit SoCal.
One of my bosses was a Geologist with an MS, and my other boss was a reservoir engineer with an MS.
Took Geology as science elective around the same time. Plate tectonics was relatively new at that time.
