I doubt he would have had access to any information requiring a security clearance because the background check for such a clearance would have uncovered his false identity.

He must have had a security clearance. The background check he received to enter the USMC did not discover the bogus BC.

Torres had just returned from Iraq and was training to deploy to Afghanistan when he lost his wallet. In the middle of trying to replace his identification cards, the military found out about the false birth certificate. Authorities didn’t press charges and he was honorably discharged thanks to his reputation and record in the marine corps.

Why he was given an HD is beyond me. He essentially lied on his employment form, which is a felony.

At first, Torres, then 25, stayed in the US, trying to make a living. But he was still undocumented and his options were limited. He couldn’t work or pay for college, so he decided to seek opportunities elsewhere.

Why was he allowed to stay in the country? He should have been turned over to ICE for deportation.

The background check done when joining is not as thorough as a background check done for a security clearance. You only get a secret or top secret clearance if needed for your particular MOS or AFSC. Has this individual needed a secret clearance, that background check would have uncovered his fraud. I only had one post 9/11 secret clearance update and I answered a lot more questions on that one. No way he had a secret clearance.
