Yet again, China is floating around the idea of building floating nuclear plants, but this time they are planning on an entire flotilla -- in the South China Sea.

To provide power to the cozy artificial islands it has built up from reefs just sticking over the surf, China announced on Friday that it will construct a fleet of 20 power plants floating over the hotly disputed waters, People's Daily reports.

Wouldn’t such a plan be highly “controversial” if proposed by the United States, attracting eco-protestors from all over the world?

They’re arranging it so any US action there risks turning it into a US-caused “Fukushima South”.

Treacherous? Yup!

Smart? Yup!

Exactly so. And what happens to the rest of us and the planet when one or more of their floating nuke Plants has a meltdown in the middle of the ocean?

Make it a submersible and call the submarine by another name.

“And what happens to the rest of us and the planet when one or more of their floating nuke Plants has a meltdown in the middle of the ocean?”

Just to attach a bit of reality to this discussion, approximately nothing.

You might recall the numerous tests of thermonuclear weapons in the Marshall Islands? Or the nuclear submarines that have gone to a watery grave?

I’m extremely pro-nuclear, but please temper the hysteria.

Yeah. Just daring any PC-run nation to even *think* of sinking one.

It isn't *that* bad: water is a *great* neutron attenuator if you have an ocean's worth.

But the diffusion currents of long-half-life isotopes, should the containment vessels rupture, may prove to be another matter.

“. . . hotly disputed waters”? Certainly was never disputed, hotly or otherwise, by the U.S.A. and our dear leader.

Huge mistake! If Hilton would have wanted to build a resort on these atolls, you can be certain that president ubama would have sent the Navy to stop it.

“China and safety standards. Oxymoron”

The Russians taught them everything they know about safety standards. Which is to say, nothing.

The question is not the quality of the workmanship. The question is why do they feel they need enough electricity to power a small city on a very small island? Are they planning for laser weapons or rail guns?

Why aren't they building Windmills?

It's not like they can be seen by Liberals off the Coast of Massachusetts.

There isn't a Kennedy Compound in China, is there?
