FDA warns sweetener used in chewing gum can be deadly to dogs

The FDA is ramping up warnings about a common sweetener that can be toxic to dogs.

Xylitol, a type of sweetener found in many sugar-free gums and other products, can have devastating consequences if ingested by a dog, the agency said in a statement issued Thursday.

Over the past several years, the FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine has received a number of reports of dogs being poisoned by xylitol, sometimes with deadly consequences, the agency said.

Xylitol-related calls to the ASPCA's Animal Poison Control Center rose from 82 in 2004 to more than 3,700 in 2014, as CBS News correspondent Chip Reid reported last fall. According to the Wall Street Journal, the Pet Poison Helpline has seen a 15 percent increase in such calls so far this year.

And for people, is it also dangerous?

Every commercial chewing gum has sucralose in it which is toxic to humans. What a scam ingredient. There is no need for it. It’s even put into sugar gums. It must be a payoff thing. I can’t let my kids chew that fake sugar.

Its killed several of my canine patients. I'm finding it in children's Benadryl, childrens Tylenol, toothpaste, candies, and chewing gum. The sad thing is that only until late do we usually find out there has been a xylitol ingestion and by then its too late.

Xyla has been recommended by Dr. Natasha Turner and featured on 60 Minutes, CBC, CNN and Katie Couric.

I got to the above by a link I found on the box of *Xyla* — little round pill like sweet things I put in mouth. Flavors like chocolate, peppermint. Not cheap.
From a plant material I think.

I heard of it as something to combat cavities.
Is VERY sweet. Hard to think it would combat cavities ~

Seems they are actively developing new things for it.

I find aspertame very bad, even a little will make me quite depressed.

For me sucralose is benign.

Your mileage may vary.

“FDA warns sweetener used in chewing gum can be deadly to dogs”

Despite the ridiculously ignorant disclaimer in the article about cats, xylitol is just as deadly for cats as for dogs:

Xylitol is primarily produced in China although the USA and other countries also manufactures it.

I have been chewing gum with Xylitol instead of smoking. Yikes maybe smoking is better.

Chocolate is deadly to many breeds of dog.

Just to be on the safe side, send me all your chocolate for proper disposal...

Apparently xylitol can also kill birds:

It is not toxic to humans.
