AUGUSTA, Maine —Documents show an Appalachian Trail hiker whose remains were found last year in Maine survived at least 26 days after getting lost.

During that time, her texts went undelivered because of poor cell reception.

The Boston Globe reports Geraldine Largay kept a journal in which she acknowledged that she expected to die and that it might be years before her remains were found.

Very tragic, we used to get a lot of people from back east that would go hunting in the mountains and die. Seems she had no ability to even make a fire for signal? you need to have some basic preparations to be able to survive and be found... very sad.

The Brentwood, Tennessee, woman got lost after going off the trail in July 2013, presumably, wardens believe, to relieve herself.

Get ready for Geraldine's law requiring gender-neutral rest rooms in the woods.

“Appalachian Trail hiker “

I think most of that trail is unmarked. Not something to attempt if you can’t camp.

Sad, but also stupid. If she had an operable cell phone then she had a compass. She could have shot an azimuth east. And walked instead of staying stationary. Eventually, she would have come upon a road, traveled trail, etc. apparently her thinker was broke.....

Without know all the circumstances/details .....That's a very rugged area, I'm familiar with it. The Seals use it for a base for winter survival training. IIRC, it in the area of Saddleback, near Rangeley. Wilderness.

She apparently never built any fire for at least a smoke signal?? something since they would have been searching close to where she was...

If you are going into the woods you need to have some basic skills, at least to signal with.

I’ve spent a lot of time in New England forests. I can never understand how people get “lost” for more than a day or so. If you walk in a straight line you are going to go more than 20 miles without cross a pretty significant road.

I guess it means you need a map of where you are, and a compass.

It’s actually very difficult to walk a straight line

“She apparently never built any fire for at least a smoke signal?? “

I’ve hunted Alaska, Canada and most states along the Rockies and some how managed not to get lost. Maybe because I was prepared and I knew they would always find me if I did. I’ll set a mountain on fire if need be!

She was 66 and hiking alone. Not a real good idea to begin with.

Yes, I'm sure she thought as she was dying "This is really great! I'm dying in the woods. I love dying in the woods. This is SOOO much better than being at home alive."

I read found that she was 3000 yards off the trail a good fire would have been easy to spot a big fire would have brought in hundreds.

If a little fire didn’t do it a big one would.

It says she was a experience hiker I wonder how experience she was hiking in parks and on trails is a whole lot different then bush whacking.

yes but age wasnt a factor I dont believe. Had she just started a fire for a couple days with smoke Im sure she would have been found, she wasnt all that far from where they were looking...
