I once read part of a letter a Roman soldier wrote home from Britain. I think it was posted here on FR.

Anyway the translation was something like you might expect of a kid at Summer camp. The weather here is awful. Could you send me some new shoes? Could you spare some money?

I read that one but it had a happy ending:

Wait a minute, it’s stopped hailing.
Guys are swimming, guys are sailing
Playing baseball, gee that’s bettah
Muddah, faddah kindly disregard this letter!
