A neighbor won $32K on the $64,000 Question TV quiz program.

He spent it on a fallout shelter in his basement. LOL!

You’re right about segregation, of course. However, my folks knew a Black couple who worked. The woman worked for herself, and the husband worked in manufacturing.

People just worked, whatever the color. And they married.

Federal aid came in and changed all that.

You are right about the a/ c. I grew up in Houston without air conditioning. We had no idea how miserable we were.

Crime was low, we never locked our house unless we went out of town for a week or two (in our UN air conditioned car). I remember mom had to hunt for the door key.

We had one phone, no TV and one bathroom (but it was inside the house ).

The radio of our parent’s era and then the invention of transistor radio...music traveled with you wherever. Are you familiar with this site? We nostalgia fans consume with fervor when we find something we fondly remember

I’ve experienced the same thing in some of the places I lived 35-40 years ago. It has always been that way though. Cities grow and demographics change.

Where I live now, I bike for miles without fear. I walk just as far and never once have I felt threatened. There is a lake between myself and the city so I am very close to a major metropolitan area.
That being said, I know where not to go. 10 miles north of the city and it is basically a war zone. 50 years ago, it was not.

Oh, yes, the Soviets knew how to work us, huh? The young Russians today are seeing how the US is being destroyed from within by its leadership are probably wondering how the generation in charge during the Cold War had such a hard time with the US. ~~sigh~~

Korean War fighting ended by July 1953. Most of the ‘50s were peaceful.

Almost exactly 3 months after the Korean War ended, yours truly entered the world. :-)

Like you, the "fear of nuclear war" didn't come to the forefront until the Cuban Missile Crisis. Something I remember about the 50s was watching "The Honeymooners", "The Mickey Mouse Club" and "Romper Room" on a round black & white TV set.

My friends and I played outside (or in Brooklyn, on the fire escape): cowboys and indians with cap guns and bow & arrows (the ones with suction cups); stickball in the street (running to dodge the cars); and walking to and from school - all these activities without helicopter moms!

We had some Jupiter nuclear missiles installed in Turkey and Italy, pretty much on Russia’s doorstep and the Soviets didn’t like it. So they planted theirs in Cuba.

The negotiations that resulted from the missile crisis removed our Jupiters and their Cuban missiles. But the Jupiters were medium range and obsolete so it didn’t matter much. The big long range ICBMs were just coming online to replace them.

What a beautiful song! Distinctly doo-wop, yet with a unique twist. Love it.

Here's one that always made me swoon: "To be Loved (Forever)" by The Pentagons from 1961. I have the 45 somewhere in my extensive collection and remember that logo of the pony-tailed girl on the Donna record label. I must have worn the record thin from playing it so much. ;)

'Twas a very special era. I'm happy to have been born into it.
