If a rock is 1 million years old. And flints are made from that rock. Are the flints 1 million years old?
This is a problem I have with a bazillion finds.

That's exactly what I'm talkin about...

Knapping a million year old flint exposes fresh surfaces to weathering and the elements (ground water, etc.) start to alter the surface.
The thicker the weathered layer, the longer the tool was exposed to the elements, and the older it is.
This gives a rough estimate of the age of the tool.
