It is a combination of thoughtless, "because FEELZ" environmental-wacko virtue signaling, and conspicuous consumption: given the break-even point as pointed out elsewhere on the thread, would be $6.00/gal gas.

Incidentally, the weenies who humblebrag over the environmental chops they get over this car, always decline to talk about the toxic metals in the batteries.

Nobody is criticizing him. Nobody cares. But people who are insecure about what they are doing like to pretend they are being criticized and persecuted for their moral stance. That way they earn "virtue points".

You run into it mostly with vegans but there are other groups that do this.

You can almost see their self awarded halo (solar powered and free trade no doubt) switch on every time they bring up the subject.

Which is almost every time they open their mouths.
