Yes, and the eclipse of the House of Wittelsbach, that might have served as something of a parachute for the Habsburgs had it not been completely subordinated to the Hohenzollerns. Their chance to resume their prominence after the latter abdicated in 1918 was marred by the fact that the Crown Prince happened to be a German Field Marshal (and a damn good one). Too bad, too, because the resulting chaos in that area was Hitler’s nursery.
