Teen Hacker Says He Jailbroke The iPhone 7 in Just 24 Hours
Motherboard ^ | September 22, 2016 | LORENZO FRANCESCHI-BICCHIERAI

The iPhone 7 is, in Apple’s own words, “the best, most advanced iPhone ever.” It is not, however, impossible to hack.

A teenage hacker has found a way to circumvent the phone’s security and restrictions, jailbreaking a brand new iPhone 7 running iOS 10, effectively taking full control of it and allowing him to install apps not approved by Apple. The 19-year-old hacker, who’s known online as qwertyoruiop but whose real name is Luca Todesco, took advantage of a series of bugs he found and exploited—and all it took him, he said, was just 24 hours.

And - she's cracked. Good news for the jailbreak/sideloading community! Locked down devices are, IMHO, more harmful than helpful. Not only do they put up roadblocks to those who want to legitimately access "hidden" features and use their hardware in new and novel ways, they also tend to make the rest of the community feel too safe. That it's locked down hard and can't be broken or infected - when, in fact, it can. A false sense of security, so to speak.

Best to leave things open (perhaps you need just a simple mode and an administrator/root mode) and keep the consumer aware of the risks that may exist rather than living in a world of false security.

But...but....but...I was told Apple was the messiah, unhackable and immune to viruses.

Wow - being able to install whatever programs you like on a computing device that you purchased and own. What a novel concept.

It's pretty pathetic that Apple now makes this a hacking feat.

As local state and federal government ramp up their ubiquitous spy networks, hacking will be the best way to take big brother down.
Coward and Piven the government.

If he can do that it's the equivalent of doing a LOT of studying of high school subjects. He's already well positioned for a solid career, even without college.

I just recycled my old Dell PC that I bought in 2000 running Windows XP. It was still working, but just painfully slow compared to my current PC. The build on them was better back then compared to today. I never spent any money on repairs.

Teen hacker, Luca Todesco, has announced he's first to jailbreak an iPhone 7. Of course, the vast majority of malware exploits for iOS exist on apps written which run ONLY on jailbroken iOS devices which is why it is not a good idea to jailbreak your iPhone or iPad. There is a reason why letting just anything and anyone write apps on your mobile devices is a BAD IDEA contrary to what some on this thread are advocating. — PING!

I believe Apple pays six figures to hackers whom come forward with their results so that they can get a fix in the works. This kid will have his own house in short order.

Rather, with malware existing in the app store, I would contend it is MUCH worse to assume that "jailbreak = pwnd / Appstore = safe". A false sense of security derived from an "Appstore is safe" position is bad.

Rather, educate the consumer about the dangers of installing various software and hardware devices. Much like you educate your children about how to drive. Don't try to shield them, protect them, coddle them until they go and do it themselves and end up in trouble.

I have one same year with XP. Bought a new one with windows 10 and have been stripping off the old one. It’s headed for Best Buy soon. RIP. I’d still be using t but many websites would not work with my version of Internet explorer and it could not upgrade. It was only a matter of time.
