Need Help With RealPlayer
3 Oct 16 | txnativegop

I need help with RealPlayer. I have the last free version that was made available.

RealPlayer apparently tries to connect to the Internet whenever the program is opened. This is, I think, causing it to crash whenever I play videos.

I was without internet access for a week and the program never stopped working once.

My question is this:

Is there a way to disable RealPlayer's ability to connect to the Internet?

thanks in advance for any help. I will be unable to check the thread until 2100 hrs eastern time tonight.

Honestly, I saw your thread title and thought I was in a time warp. I had no idea those folks were still around. I used to work across the street from their offices.

LOL - same with me. Actually when “RealAudio” came out it was definitely a killer app. By the time it became the bloated “Real Player” it was total crap - as invasive as any virus.

Solution 1: Check to see that you are signed in to RealPlayer.

Wow...I had a flashback as well. Are you running Windows ME?

I have VLC and and old Winamp (5.81) on my machine and both can easily be told to not go out and touch someone. Handles all my video/music needs.

Switch to VLC Media Player. It plays everything, is free, and is stable.

Does VLC play Real Audio files?

Occasionally you find something on an old website that is stored in that format. But never again will I download their hideous software.

I use and like very much Windows Media Player (version 11). The only problem I have with it is I wish there were a way to directly link my music and video collections via their folders and subfolders, as opposed to copy and pasting individual selections into a newly created WMP playlist.

I am going to go against the grain and suggest something other than VLC. Normally, most applications work just fine on the PCs I have had over the years. But for some reason, VLC gives me more trouble than it is worth.

It didn't use to be that way prior to switching to Win 7 Pro a few years ago. I have uninstalled and re-installed to the latest version more than once, but the issues still persist. Long lag times starting a video or a song, occasionally freezing up and requiring an exit from the task manager.

With that said, I'll add Media Player Classic as another suggested substitute.

Switch to VLC Media Player. It plays everything, is free, and is stable.

Can you access your music and video collections via their folders and subfolders? Because, with Windows Media Player, you have to create playlists within the program. You can't organize your M&V collections by folders and subfolders.

I haven’t even seen ‘real player’ since windows 95 days. It was a garbage app way back then. I’m sure it still is. If you’re on a windows machine you should go to program manager and uninstall it completely.

Well try this:

Start the player, click the “RealPlayer” icon in the top left, then click Preferences. Go to the “Connection” category, and under “Online Status” change it to “Automatically detect my online status”.

There are also some settings in the “Internet” subcategory that you can turn off for additional information it will be trying to send back and forth on the internet.

Proceed in this order:
- - -
1) Uninstall RP
2) Run CCleaner to flush it from your registry
3) Install something decent like VLC, IrfanView, LightAlloy, etc.

IOW, RP blows.

You’re better off using VLC. Like others have said, it’s free. I’ve used it on my Macs for a long time without any issues.

I prefer Winamp but have to use VLC on my Android tablet. I prefer not to use VLC but there is no choice. I've looked high and low for an Android acceptable player that works like Winamp but haven't found one yet.
