Michelle Obama sets her garden in stone

First lady Michelle Obama is making sure that whoever inhabits the White House next doesn’t rip out her iconic vegetable garden — at least not without a big fuss.

Obama Wednesday afternoon unveiled a much bigger version of the garden that uses cement, stone and steel to make it a more permanent fixture on the South Lawn. The updates are seen not just as preserving Obama’s garden — recognized globally as a symbol of local food — but also as a way to dissuade, say, a President Donald Trump from scrapping it the way Ronald Reagan tore out Jimmy Carter's solar panels after he moved into the White House.

“I think people would be really upset,” said Marta McDowell, a landscape historian who recently wrote a book on White House gardens. She called Obama’s preservation plan “brilliant,” adding, “If it were taken out, it would truly just be a political statement.”

Unlike Obama's sweeping school nutrition reforms, the garden has largely escaped GOP ire, but it has not been without controversy. Just days after she planted the garden in 2009 — the precursor to her childhood obesity campaign — the pesticide lobby was piqued by media reports calling it organic and wrote the first lady, urging her to use conventional agriculture techniques. The White House did not write back.

“If it were taken out, it would truly just be a political statement.”

Since it was used for political propaganda, that’s all
it WAS.

Rip it OUT!

‘Make it difficult to tear out? I guess she forgot he’s in construction.’

That was my first thought as well. Trump may see her reinforcements as a challenge, and be all the more inclined to show her what a lifetime in the construction business can do.

Probably best to seed it with flowers the first couple of years, though. Less negative PR when he eventually up roots it, that way.

Not that hard to fix. Slap up a fence around it, 10 - 15 goats, and a couple of Obama’s illegals to tend them (doing the jobs Americans won’t).

How about a Trump adds a plaque that says “Wookie Gardens” or would that be too much?

Doesn't look like that much cement...

I really don’t mind a garden at the WH, but self-dedicating is a bit droll since it robs the successor the gracefulness of inviting the Moose back for an official dedication. I’m assuming she hasn’t reached out to either ‘first’ and is just dictating via the press.

That would be a GREAT visual. Trump ripping out the “permanent” garden, saying, “next goes Obamacare, just as easy as this.”

Trump should put a Philly Cheese-steak stand there.

Trump should tear it out and say he is going to build a much larger and more magnificent garden than Micelle’e puny one.

I don't remember the figure now, but when Michelle started the garden, word leaked out about how many manhours by White House staff were devoted by White House staff. Michelle's involvement is to show up for the occasional photo op.

I don't have a strong feeling about it one way or the other. One notable Republican in the ag orbit once remarked re: the demonstration garden at USDA that he'd keep it, but convert it to a biotech showplace. One might do something similar at the WH.

If one wanted to scrap it, the right approach would be to total up the staff time and translate the cost into $7 carrots and $15 heads of lettuce (just to make up some numbers). Then say Michelle would be welcomed back to the White House if she personally wants to keep it up, but if not, we're no longer going to waste WH staff time on an expensive vanity project.

I kind of like that there’s a veggie garden at the WH.

Fresh produce right off the stalk is divine.

I can picture Trump maybe making it bigger and better, not getting rid of it.

He seems sensible enough to appreciate fresh foods and not tell US what to eat.

Leave the garden alone. Neglect it, let it get overrun with weeds. Put a plaque in front of it saying, “Barack Obama’s legacy to Black America”.

and at some point, when it dries out, start a fire and yell BLM! BLM! BLM!
