Yesterday I attempted to install the latest Windows Update, after my computer went rogue and started freezing, as it does every time I ignore the Update. It runs Vista because I've refused 8, 9 and 10.
The Progress Bar spun at "Downloading" for over an hour. I got out and went looking for a solution.
One that made sense was "Complete any other update then try again" so I did.
The system was then stuck at "searching for updates" and would only last a few minutes before crashing.
I got to the Microsoft site and found the correct update, 32 bits for my computer. But it kept spinning at "Searching for updates". And then it refused to function on the web, throwing up various errors.
"Update History" shows the incomplete attempt.
Since then Dear Husband has tried several fixes to no avail. He's a great computer guy, so this is pretty hugh AND series.
If this tale of woe makes any sense to anyone and you have inside info please share.
I am posting from my Not That Smart phone, this has taken 25 minutes to type.
God bless you for 20 generations if you share the secret. I keep thinking about the classic "Computer Haikus" and the Blue Screen of Death.
OT, but SlimJet bump! Fantastic browser. I used to be a Firefox finatic. Then I tried SlimJet and haven’t looked back.
To CaptainPhilFan: when you get your computer running, 2 suggestions:
1. Update to Win 7.
2. Begin to clone your hard drive. There are is bunch of cloning software out there. I like the free Easeus Todo Backup. With the clone you can just swap out the hard drive and the problem is no more. Sort of like an ultimate system restore point.
Wow! FReepers are the best! Thank you all for good suggestions, and I think you even helped some others with computer trouble.
Truly, I’m not sure what DH did, but I’m running Firefox with no problems. I think he said “Don’t open Chrome”, but will ask him later and report back. He told me this morning what he’d done but that was before coffee. :)
Please carry on, your help and advice is an invaluable service.
“Vista was the WORST OS ever.”
MS-DOS 4 was pretty bad. Version 3.3 hit the sweet spot, a balance between power and small memory footprint. After that, it was all bloat.
Windows 2000 did the same thing in the GUI OS field. So long as you didn’t update it. Total memory use was 35 meg and it ran faster than anything since.
My opinion, your mileage may vary . . .
Vista was a memory hog. That never bodes well.
‘Slim Jet’ is great....bumping back at ya!.....only been using it a few weeks now but it’s Crome like and even looks like it...so there was no adjusting to how to use it etc...easy switch...
FireFox is a “dog” by comparison....never got use to it...slow and burdensome to be sure.
