Yes.
I researched this topic Exhaustively.

The Best amateur radio transceiver made that’s affordable, portable, super reliable, backpackable, uses little power, has its own battery pack, and provides you with the capability to communicate Around the world is the:
Yaesu FT-817ND.

Period

5 watts of low power QRP sexiness.

The little Banbullsh1t $30 radios you see on Am@z0n are FM radios 2m radios that rely on repeaters that are located every 5 miles that require electricty.

HF is the ONLY way to go.
*Study for your Technician Class license immediately and **grab a FT 817ND while you can.
I’ll go into portable affordable antennas later.

(I’m not telling you my call sign here cuz of red kit harvesting ;n)

RE: “Can anyone make a recommendation on a radio to purchase? What features should I be mainly concerned with?”

Go see them, make friends, they could be your only connection to the outside world. Plus, if you ever become interested in getting your ham license, it’s recommended that you have an “Elmer”. Basically someone to show you the ropes, someone to hang out with to see things in action, get advice on equipment etc etc.

Yep - and the ARRL web site also has a calendar for upcoming "hamfests" and swap meets - good resources for initiating contact with other enthusiasts in your area.

It's always a good idea to look at the rigs that are favored for use during radio "field days" - and that Yaesu is one of the radios that is consistently seen at those events. Put it in a rugged "go box" and keep it as mobile as possible. Home base station rigs are nice, but mobility is a much bigger consideration.

Charles, thanks for your input!
Plus you can also turn it into somewhat of a base station with a linear amplifier and pump out 25 - 100 watts way beyond the 5 watts that the rig comes with.

Communications - for when other forms of communication are not available

For those of you who were unaware, there was a DDOS attack
which interfered with internet and other communications on both coasts
It may have been a trial run. It knocked down commercial , financial, and social media communications.

There is a lot of cumulative information in this thread that is over my head and understanding
but I would be remiss if not informing you of an electronic attack on the internet today.

Please review this article as it is most informative and helpful
Please read the whole thread as there is much information to be gained, even if it is over your own understanding; it may become relevant at a later date and time
Consider printing it out as a future reference.
There is information regarding emergency radio system , Ham radio, and other services.

If you are interested in learning more about Communication, I would direct you to post # 42 which speaks of an upcoming, (in three days) of a :
WEBINAR by OATHKEEPERS :

Oath Keepers Webinar on Emergency Communications & EMP Protection. 10-24, 8PM CENTRAL time on MONDAY ,Oct 24, 2016 8:00 PM CDT

It does require prior notification , and you will receive an email confirmation and notification about how and where to attend the WEBINAR.

The nature of this attack via DDOS is unknown, whether from inside the US , or foreign.
Given the secret nature by which our own government has violated the intent of the Fourth Amendment, all possibilities should be considered,
especially with a promised " OCTOBER SURPRISE ".

Well stated, Lt!

To anyone interested, here’s an Excellent video on what it’s like to send and receive email messages via HF shortwave radio via Winlink RMS.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=WRv9DbqnnDg

Imagine, you can send emails for free all around the world!

Its slow, however, something is better than nothing.
And in a total SHTF situation, the man who can send and get critical communications will be mucho popular in their compound, ie: rewarded with double gruel rations, and all the feral females you can handle!
BTW: keep transmissions short so the Predator drones don’t get a lock on you.

Great post, great thread!

To get beyond local comms you’ll need a general ticket for HF.

I think we need to let people know that 'local comms' in the ham world are usually in the 50 mile range using small inexpensive radios through local repeaters maintained by local hams, many with backup power.

Another possibility that I haven't seen mentioned yet is a local wifi network. These networks can be as large as desired using standard computer wifi routers. An internet connection is not needed for this ad hoc type setup.

I have read about the use of local catv cable for a wired community network as well.

Can’t say much specific. If you only knew.
This is just the beginning now that hackers have NSA malware tools:
Hacked IoT CVTV Cameras, DVRs Powered Today’s Massive Internet Outage — Krebs on Security

https://krebsonsecurity.com/2016/10/hacked-cameras-dvrs-powered-todays-massive-internet-outage/

US gov’t and IoT mfg consortium are becoming very aware of how vulnerable tens of Millions of Internet enabled devices are to being attacked and compromised.

https://www.ntia.doc.gov/category/internet-things

Incorporating security onto a device, ie: Internet enabled thermostat, camera, light bulb, AFTER mfg, is Very difficult.

Most devices were not designed with security controls from the beginning, and changing hardware, firmware and software after the fact can be impossible.

BTW: I remember reading decades ago about Hopi Indian predictions for our world’s final stage.
Legends told there would come a day when our tools would actually attack and massacre mankind.
Hmmm, kinda prescient - Hacker, meet SkyNet...
