Gannett on Tuesday walked away from its attempted takeover of Tronc, the publisher of the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune and other major dailies.
USA Today publisher Gannetts target was elusive from the beginning, with a publicly contentious back-and-forth between the two companies.
Tronc, formerly known as Tribune Publishing, rejected at least two bids from Gannett because it said it preferred to go it alone, focusing on tech-driven initiatives involving artificial intelligence and global expansion in entertainment news and video.
Shares of Tronc Inc. plunged 20 percent in early trading.

This is one of those “who cares who wins?” situations.
Gannett bought the Arizona Republic, turned it into an extreme left wing rag and Arizonans stopped buying the Arizona Republic. A man has to know who his audience is.
And readers are giving up on Gannett

So far, the press has been too stupid- - or corrupt - - to figure this out...
Gannett ended up with the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel ruined both dead tree and online versions.
Soon, Gannett will be the only company making buggy whips.
I used to dodge their pay walls by deleting cookies, but they have recently adopted more intrusive tactics and thusly ensuring their own demise.

Our local Gannett rag used to have an open discussion forum on which a controversial topic would frequently get hundreds of comments, good discussions and some flamewars. A couple of years ago they started requiring Facebook to comment, and now few topics get even a couple of dozen comments.

These guys will never know that common sense has been, is and always be far superior to “artificial intelligence”.
