Android 'Gooligan' Hackers Just Scored The Biggest Ever Theft Of Google Accounts

More than a million Android phones are infected with Gooligan, a strain of malware Google is fighting in earnest.

A new variant of Android malware is responsible for what’s believed to be the biggest single theft of Google accounts on record. The so-called Gooligan strain has infected as many as 1.3 million Android phones since August, completely prizing the devices open and stealing the tokens users are given to verify they are authorized to access their accounts. It’s main aim, though, is not to pilfer all that juicy data in Gmail or Docs, but to force users into downloading apps as part of a huge advertising fraud scheme, making as much as $320,000 a month.

And Gooligan is spreading at an alarming rate: since the start of this month, it’s been racking up an average of 13,000 new infections every day, according to researchers from Check Point. The malicious software first gains a foothold on devices when users visit a website and download a third-party app. Michael Shaulov, head of mobile and sloud Security Check Point, said that might be a porn site, or a third-party app store, where visitors are encouraged to download software to get access to content.

You wear Apple pajamas, don't you. d;^)

All a sane person can do is shake their head ruefully at such obsession.

Seek help, man.

Why the insults, man? I maintain the Apple/iOS Ping list on FreeRepublic for over 750 of your fellow Freepers who have ALL personally asked me to do it. So, no I do not wear Apple Pajamas. Nor do I find the innuendo funny after the Nth time I've been insulted by such as you.

I posted this article for the users of the Android platform and pinged the keepers of the other two lists to warn the users of that platform that there is a particularly nasty malware out there for that platform that could root their devices because I ran across it . . . and YOU choose to use that post to attack me? You are the one who seems to have a problem.

First of all, the phone has to be rootable. Not all phones are rootable. The brand and model I use has difficulty in being rooted.

OTOH, it would be nice if someone stole the mail in my spam box.

I guess it's a good thing I don't live in Earnest.

Thanks, Swordmaker! I have both Apple and Android devices. Great to know you are always on the job letting us know what we need to know to stay up-to-date and safe!

Hi Swordmaker,

I'm gonna let ThunderSleeps get this one -- it's Android, not MS/Windows, and the folks on my list who have Android devices are likely already on the Android list. Next time I have a Windows article to ping on, I'm going to reinforce that with a comment that those with Android devices should sign up for ThunderSleeps' list.

In other news, I'll never understand why some people have to throw cr@p around, just for the sake of throwing cr@p. Oh well.

No, just after 12 years I'm damned tired of what you think is "good natured" ribbing that calls into question MY sanity and recommendations to "get help." Give it a rest. I no longer find it "good natured" after putting up with it for so long. I've long since lost my sense of humor about being the butt of your jokes.

Oh boy. I bet when you fart only dogs can hear it.

You ask for it. Gleefully pointing out the most trivial flaw of anything non-Apple and shouting Apple accolades whenever they come up with yet another way to fleece their customer base with some trinket. That complete pMSNBC-style bias and sticky sweet "fanboy-ness" is what's tiresome & pathetic. That pious horsecrap about keeping us great unwashed "informed" about our crappy little non-apple devices was just that, a real crock of horsecrap. The snotty l'il attitude only compounds things and encourages jokers like me to try and get yer "Apple-licensed" undies inna wad.

So lighten up, Francis. You'll live longer. I'm sure the gang at yer current fav RPG is missing you by now. d:^)

Oh boy. I bet when you fart only dogs can hear it.

And you said you were just doing "good natured ribbing." There you go with piling on more nasty insults and slurs. I knew you weren't kidding and you have now doubled down on the insults and ad hominem attacks. You are one singular piece of work.

Somehow I have tweaked your panties into a wad because YOUR preferred platform has some horrid flaws that put its users at risk. . . And YOU don't like it when it is sometimes important to tell people who use that platform to be aware of them risks and flaws and how to avoid those possible flaws. So you assault the messenger. WOW!

Did you also attack FORBES? They are just one of the mainstream news sources who has this in the news today. . . Do you want it suppressed? Did you notice I did NOT alert the Apple Ping list? They don't need to know about this problem and they don't need to gloat at the expense of the users of Android. . . But some ANDROID users are thanking me for alerting them to this.

It might surprise you but it was at my suggestion that there is even an Android ping list on FreeRepublic. No give it a rest.

Fair enough. I pinged you on this because many Windows PC users may also be Android users. . . And many of the share their Google ID data with their Android devices. I would agree that if they are Android users they should join ThunderSleeps Android list. I am less and less willing to ping the Apple list to catch those Apple users who are also Android users on issues such as this. As you may have noticed, I did not ping them to this one, and have not to several others Android issues in the past, just pinging Thunder and/or you for your decision as to whether your group would benefit from a ping.

Then we have the metallic one in this thread. . . Who claims to be just posting the same vile "good hearted ribbing" while actually posting the same old nasty insults and slurs. I'm used to it, but I don't accept it or put up with such incivility and rude behavior. I'm just damned tired of it.

Ok, holy crap. "Assault", "attack". Really? Whot a delicate brony.
That IS good natured ribbing. It's what most real guys do. Apologies for stepping outside that group.
Are ya sure yer not mistaking this place for DU or HUFFington? Hehehe.

And on that note, Ima head out to the woods for a few days to kill something. Adios, muchachos!
Have a nice life with your de-vices. d;^)

More malware... death penalty for malware writing anyone? - ANDROID PING!

Android Ping!
If you want on or off the Android Ping List, Freepmail me.

My take on it: don't panic - unless you make a habit of downloading Android apps from third party sites. There are a lot of risks with this kind of thing. This latest malware is yet another example.
