I’m very sorry you suffer from tinnitus. In regard to your question about cochlear implants, I’ve read they can actually enhance the ringing; I’ve steered clear from them for that reason alone.

What I have tried (as of late) is Lemon Bioflavonoid 700 mg (Lindberg brand was highly recommended over others), and it has definitely done something (however not major, but I would not stop taking it). I continue to take it every day.

I also take Acetyl L-Carnitine, and that has helped with my brain in general, the horrible foggy agitated feeling of listening to noise all day. It’s been a huge plus! I now take 500 MG 2x a day (but worked up to this amount). I take the Source Naturals brand.

Recently I’ve been taking Synchro Gold Turmeric Elixir (horrible tasting, but I’m now downing straight shots!), and it has helped with being able to have clarity to what little hearing I have left.

Also, I’ve tried the Paleo Diet and it is helpful. (Whenever I have quit coffee, for instance, the noise/lack of clarity goes away by about 20%.)

P.S. I’ve found Amazon commentary to be very helpful in regard to supplements which may or may not aid in reducing the ringing.

I have the same problem. I to to an otolarangologist every couple years just to see if there is a cure or solution. I trust them more than I trust infomercials or the internet. So far, no cure.

Here in Denver area I keep hearing stories (not advertisments)
about a Dr. Lisa (???) that has had great success with some
method or aid that provides a white noise of some sort, and
people claim it is miraculous.
I think it is Colorado Hearing and Tinnitus Clinic.

Even ex ‘Tea Party’ representative, Tom Tancredo(R), does
free ads for them because he had Tinnitus so bad, and it
worked for him.

High quality Ginko tablets brought my tinnitus under control. Watch your salt and sugar intake. Too many bananas also increase the ringing for me.

1) Prayer

2) Look at various remedies posted by people at www.earthclinic.com (see “Ted’s Remedies”)

3) Drs Durk Pearson and Dr Sandy Shaw, founders of Life Extension Foundation, talked with Dr. Harmon Kardon? years ago about a drug called Hydergine, which at higher levels of use, seemed to cure tinnitus in some people. Very very quickly. This was described in their 1980 book “Life Extension” now out of print. I don’t think I have the doctor’s name correct, but the man also wrote a book on his clinical use of niacin (B3) to reverse Alzheimer’s in his own mother. The drug is available generically.

Does anyone know or has heard about a cure for neuropathy in the feet? There are hundreds of medical quacks throughout the nation and “neuropathy centers” who claim to have discovered a cure for this insidious disease. It is not an outright killer, but the constant pain in the bottoms of the feet prevents the person to use his feet, thereby rendering him lame after years because of the disuse of his limbs. Elderly people are prone to fall and break bones because their instability. I have come to the point where I think that the only solution for this problem is foot amputation and replacement with prostatic feet. Has any FReeper heard of a solution for easing the Pain? It is said that 20% of diabetics suffer from neuropathy in the feet.

I’m 78 and I can’t tell you how long I’ve had it, it’s been that long but I also have what I describe as 1million crickets all chirping at the same time in both ears, but just the normal everyday sound of things makes me forget it.

Get some hearing aids. My buddy has tinnitus and it stopped when he broke down and bought hearing aids.

Well. I be derned. I’d never noticed the ringing in my ears
until I clicked on this thread. Guess I’d just IGNORED it
for a long time. - Try stuff until you find something that
works. FANG had it for a while; and best I remember he took
diuretics, had his ears cleaned out at the doctor’s. Now he
never mentions it; which he would if it hadn’t quit I think.

To: far sider; All
5 decades of beating things for a living with guitar players and loud Marshall amps has left me with a rather serious case of tinnitus (which I've always mispronounced as tin-night-tus rather than tin-a-tis).

I'm finally getting around to seeing the audiologists at the VA even though my primary care physician recently told me nothing can be done.

20 years ago they treated me with low dose Xanex and that seemed to help (although the VA eventually canned that Doctor as his 'better living through chemistry' philosophy seemed to involve Xanex for all his patients.

In order to get the hearing tests they're sending me for a "cleaning" which is a high-tech ear wax removal. I watched some videos of the procedure on u-tube out of curiosity. The videos are gross as the attachments they use gently suction and brush gobs of ear wax from deep within ear canals. It seems that using q-tips can actually force ear wax deeper and impact it into the ear drum and some of the recipients claim the wax removal helped with their tinnitus. I can only imagine what they'll find in these old ears, but I'm willing to try anything at this point.

To: far sider; Drumbo

I’ve nothing new to add, other than a caution on the Lipo-Flavanoid. I read a lot of the user reviews. For some it seemed a miraculous cure. For others, nothing or so-so results. But for the so-sos who stopped taking it, the symptoms came back worse, making them more miserable.

I’d been delighted to discover this marvel of medicine & was going to buy it for my FRiend Drumbo who has tinnitus, but we decided after research to avoid it altogether. Who needs tinnitis to return with a vengeance?

Years ago I had a coworker who wore a noise-cancelling machine with buds in his ears. He seemed satisfied, tho of course it blocked his regular hearing. Hmmmmmm, maybe that was a benefit.

My mother has told me that back when door to door salesmen were common, my grandmother was always having hearing aid drummers over to pitch their wares to her husband, my grandfather. He would great them on the porch. Very much aware that she was listening from only a room away, Papaw would roll his eyes kitchen-ward & bellow that he could HEAR ENOUGH, THANK YOU! and send the disappointed salesman along his way.

Because of tinnitis, Drumbo has to sleep with white noise, like from TV. That’s fine with me - it’s just a matter of learning which programming to avoid (infomercials) and which satisfies both if you have a sleep partner. He’s fine w/ Fox news but I can only tolerate a drama where the actors are talking to each other rather than directly at the viewer like a news reporter, LOL. Cable music channels (not videos, just music) are great, too.

Sorry, wish I could be more helpful to you.

I don’t have time to do the search right now, but there was something recently about a class of antibiotics, the class of which Cipro is a member, that causes hearing loss and tinnitus. I got mine in the hospital after a surgery in 2013. It is a swooshing sound. It’s not that bad. Left ear only.

I at first thought it was the air conditioning. Then when I went into the bathroom, where there is no air conditioning, it was still there. I told a nurse and she said uh-oh.

My ENT said it is not fixable. It is a loss of cilia in the middle ear. My SIL who is a nurse said it is the antibiotics, or one of them.

If there is a tinnitus list, I would like to be on it to be sure I hear of any breakthrough.
