I never believed in Santa and recall the day that I told my mom that I didn’t believe.

I was so taken aback by her stunned reaction (which began with widened eyes and the passionate declaration: “Of course there’s a Santa!”), that for several more years I played along fearing how she would react if she found out he really did not exist and that reindeer couldn’t fly.

She learned that when she was a child over 50 years ago.

Why blame a child for a chldlike reaction?

The Real Santa Claus

The real Santa lived a long time ago in a place called Asia Minor. It is now the country of Turkey. His name was Nicholas. Nicholas' parents died when he was just a teenager. His parents left him a lot of money which made him a rich young man. He went to live with his uncle who was a priest.

We got around this by saying, “Santa Claus is the Spirit of Christmas’ — and that all those different guys dressed in different kinds of Santa suits were helpers bringing fun, joy and sharing to children and people in need. Then we explained about the Holy Spirit, which is real, but you can’t see the Holy Spirit — He works through people all year around.

That is how our family was/is. The “Santa” gifts are gifts for the house or family. This year we bought hammered copper barware for our Palm Springs house and its ‘from Santa’, or my grandfather would buy lamps that my grandmother wanted and it was ‘from Santa’. It was more of an inside joke. Even as a kid the ‘santa’ gifts were ones that I had to share (like a board game for the family)

Exactly. I grew up with the real stories about him. When my stepfather died I asked my Evil stepsister for one thing - the family icon of St. Nicholas. Since she considers icons evil (she is Penecostal) she was more than happy to comply. I have it hanging in my office.

It’s a total lie that violates a kids trust in their parents at a very early age.

My child knows that St. Nick was a real historical figure in what is now Turkey, who gave to the poor and did God’s work.

And since the source of this knowledge is Veggietales, she also knows St. Nick was a gherkin.

One of my sisters and I were discussing this just the other day. She’s anti-Santa and I’m not. Santa is fun. There’s nothing wrong with that.

Some time ago there there was a very clever advertisement on TV featuring ‘ Honest Abe ‘.

Mary Todd was asking if her bustle made her rear end look big. Lincoln pauses a long time and starts ‘ well, maybe a littl- ‘ and can’t even finish his sentence before she storms off.

One of the few laugh out loud moments watching a TV ad. Might be on youtube.

Not a joke at all. “Santa Claus” is nothing like St. Nicholas.

We raised 4 children without Santa. Kept in real and enjoyed wonderful Christmas tides without the BS.

They’re all grown and have families and continue the tradition, however Tammy quit hunting after her 4th child. Oh well...
